More Spartan pride, for less green

August 28, 2013

Making tie-dye shirts is a cheap way to show Spartan spirit for the big game. Reporter Anya Rath goes over how to make three popular tie-dye designs.

With kickoff only a day away, here are some ways to show your Spartan spirit on a budget. Not only can you dress the part, but you can easily decorate your dorm or house for the big game. Most Spartan apparel and decorations can be quite costly at the Spartan Bookstore or other outlets around campus. These ideas can help you save money and still be a true Spartan fan. Once football season is over, feel free to sport any of these crafts at home or around campus. Put down that Nike T-shirt, pull out some of these supplies and get crafty. These cheap, eco-friendly crafts are sure to show off your Spartan pride.

Other miniature projects for football season:

Make your own cornhole set (aka bean bag toss): Get in some action of your own on game day by making your own cornhole for tailgating. The Surplus Store and Recycling Center occasionally offers free wood products which can then be carved to create a homemade cornhole set. Paint it with your most spirited design, and it’s ready to go.

Homemade beer pong table: Browse the MSU Surplus Store’s vast collection to find free wood products to set up as a beer pong table. Paint any design on it and get ready for some rousing fun.

MSU-themed painted letters: 3-D cardboard letters can be found at Meijer for $1.99AF, pick out a Spartan phrase, then paint the letters in green and white designs. These add a Spartan kick to any dorm, apartment or house.

Beer bottle koozie: Dress up your drink Spartan-style by purchasing a beer koozie from Meijer for $6.

MSU scarf: Let your inner craft star shine and make a felt scarf using green and white craft felt fabric from Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores for $4.99 for a 36-by-36 inch square or purchase yarn to crochet for $3.29 at Meijer.

Decorated shoes: Show off your kicks by decking out white shoes with markers to display even more Spartan spirit. Shoes can be found at Macy’s for $30 to $40 and permanent markers can be purchased for less than $5 at Meijer.

Painted cheap lawn chairs: Purchase a wooden or plastic lawn chair and dress it up in green and white paint for the perfect tailgate.

Face stickers: These stickers are a fun and cheap way to show off your pride and it comes in packs of six for $6 at Meijer.
