With every spring season, there comes the anxiety of purchasing concert tickets — for me, at least. Every year, it seems as though the lineup of Michigan shows gets better and better, and this year’s crew is tough to beat.
Although I haven’t managed to purchase many tickets thus far, here’s my dream list of concerts coming to Michigan this spring and summer.
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, March 21 at Joe Louis Arena:
It’s safe to say I’ve been a fan of Rihanna since she released her first single, “Pon de Replay,” in 2005.
Although her sound has changed significantly since then, I’ve followed along every step of the way. After seeing her perform at DTE Energy Music Theatre in 2010, I’m convinced she can do no wrong with her sassy stage presence.
A$AP Rocky, although relatively new to the hip-hop limelight, has proven to be an increasingly innovative artist so far, and seeing him perform would be an unpredictable experience.
The pair have the potential to be unstoppable on stage, and what better venue to witness it than at The Joe?
Carrie Underwood and Hunter Hayes, April 13 at Breslin Center:
I’ve never been the biggest country fan, and I’ll be the first to admit it.
But for the many others who were introduced to Underwood on the fourth season of American Idol, her pipes were hard to deny.
She has the kind of voice that transcends genre boundaries, and from the performance clips I’ve seen, she knows how to conduct an entertaining performance as well.
As for Hunter Hayes — well, he certainly has power over the ladies. He’s serenaded his way into the hearts of women of all ages, country fans or not, and for good reason.
Vampire Weekend, May 17 at The Fillmore Detroit:
Although they’ve taken a recent hiatus, Vampire Weekend has been one of my top indie-pop go-to’s since high school.
Ezra Koenig has one of the most eclectic voices I’ve heard, paired with some supreme songwriting.
They have a sound that cannot be duplicated, and I can’t help but dance along when “Horchata” comes on.
With the Fillmore being one of my favorite venues in downtown Detroit, I only can imagine the intimate vibe.
Beyoncé, July 20 at The Palace of Auburn Hills:
Essentially, Beyoncé Knowles has held the crown since the ‘90s, and with every album she releases, she makes sure you know just that.
She has been my favorite artist practically since childhood — I didn’t tell Siri on my iPhone 4S to refer to me as Beyoncé for nothing.
Her music is so empowering and invigorating, you can’t help but strut when it blasts through your headphones.
It would take a two-hour set just to include all her hit singles, and although she’s known for her in-show improvisation, there’s no doubt it would be a concert to remember.
In the name of music, I will say: All hail Queen Bey.
