It’s that time of year again. The Roial Players, an improv group, are holding auditions for their spring one-act plays and full-length production, and they’re looking to take a few steps outside of the box.

Theatre senior Heather Carroll, who will produce the student-led theatre group’s one-act plays, said it’s about bringing a fresh perspective to the stage.

“We really like to see people come in and have fun; that’s one of the most important parts of Roial,” Carroll said.

The group, which produces several plays and improv comedy acts every semester, began auditions Wednesday for three one-act pieces and the full-length play, “All Out.” Auditions will continue from 7 p.m. to midnight Thursday and 4-8 p.m. Saturday in Snyder Hall.

“From what I understand, (‘All Out’ is) basically kind of a game show spoof,” Carroll said. “It exposes the human desire for wealth and what lengths people will really go to for money.”
RCAH assistant professor Ann Folino White, the group’s faculty adviser, said writing, directing and producing the plays is left up to the students.

“It’s a student-run group, and we take that very seriously,” White said. “They direct the plays and produce theater projects.”

With free reign given, RCAH senior Haley Carr, the Roial Players executive director, said friendship becomes a main priority as well.

“It’s a community group, so you really get close with the people you work with,” Carr said. “I made my best friends there. It’s a lot of fun to do theater in a low-pressure setting.”

Carr said when it comes to auditions, personality and work ethic come more into play than acting chops.

“It’s definitely more about seeing people who are able to collaborate and really commit to the group as opposed to acting talent,” she said.

Carroll said there’s no need to stress out preparing for an audition — it’s all about the element of fun.

“It comes down to what Roial Players is really all about,” she said. “It’s not about perfection or scaring people. We’re there to have fun, explore and make friends. We want someone who comes in ready to have fun, work and try something new and get involved.”
