Unity the theme of 2007 football season

September 3, 2007

Waking up Saturday morning went something like this:

The sun is barely even shining through the window, and I hear people screaming outside.

“WOOO!” ... “GO GREEN!” ... “GO WHITE!”

Man, my head feels like a brick was thrown at it last night. What time is it? Oh, 5 a.m. Tailgaters are already out, and it is officially football season.

I got out of bed several hours later and walked outside to Albert Avenue. All the students playing drinking games donned their new unified student section white T-shirt’s, and the atmosphere was just different.

We Are One.

I, for one, was impressed with the student turnout at the stadium. From the bird’s-eye view I had in the press box, the student section looked like an hourglass filling to the brim and eventually overflowing into the upper deck.

It was great to see Spartan faithful showing up en masse in anticipation of the first game of the season – one that is usually easy to stay in bed for and maybe show up late, if at all.

But they were out in full force.

After the inevitable “300” clips played and everyone shouted and pumped their fists in the air without missing a beat, it was clear that the fans took their occupations as Spartans seriously.

Coach Mark Dantonio had been saying how important the fans were to the team, and while they did cheer louder every time the U-M score flashed on the board than they did for Spartan touchdowns, it was a good showing for the new unified student section.

I can only imagine how hard it will be rocking when the Wolverines come to town.
