It's always hockey season for Guenther

September 17, 2007

It’s that time of the year again – when students are willingly waking up before 11 a.m. on the weekend all in the name of Spartan football.

The season is well underway, and by the time I’m rolling out of my bed on Saturdays, my roommate is most likely across campus and standing in line to enter Spartan Stadium.

You have to get there early to make sure you get the best seat in the newly formed student section or if you have to save seats for friends – or so I’ve been told.
I actually wouldn’t know because I’m a junior and have never seen a home football game.

The typical response is either disbelief or cries of outrage – usually from students who had their student section tickets ordered as soon as they received their acceptance letter from MSU.

I realize that for most students, game day is practically a holiday – a reason to eat, drink and loudly shout profanities at other teams – but for me, football has never been particularly appealing.

Growing up sleeping and breathing hockey, I missed homecoming dances, proms and the high school tradition of Friday night football games for hockey tournaments and league games.
Maybe my lack of football exposure in high school contributes to me not owning football tickets today – but I’ll take the ice and rubber over the grass and pigskin any day.
