Living options still available for fall

By Jessica Lipowski (Last updated: 01/25/09 9:00pm)

The new semester is taking root. Homework is pushed off as TV takes precedence and sleeping students begin to emerge in class. While some things remain the same each year, others, like housing, do not.

Many students investigate housing as early as a year ahead of time. But what about those students waiting until now to search?

While many complexes, such as University Village Apartments and Milford Apartments, and many houses and duplexes, are already filled, a wide variety of others still have openings.

Hudgins Realty, 117 Gunson St., is one of those still accepting applications. While its houses are all rented, Jeff Hudgins, co-owner of Hudgins Realty Inc., said there are a handful of studio and one-bedroom apartments left, ranging in price from $575 to $675 per month.

Hagan Realty Inc., boasts being a family-run company.

“Whenever someone calls with a maintenance thing, they talk to a Hagan,” said Matt Hagan, an agent of Hagan Realty, 927 E. Grand River Ave., suite 11.

Twenty houses are still available, mostly on the outskirts of town, Hagan said. Prices range from $600 for a two-bedroom up to $1,280 for a newly remodeled four-bedroom.

Other leasing offices pride themselves on location more so than anything else, such as College Manor Apartments, 102 Albert Ave.

“We have a wonderful location,” facilities manager Edward Curth said. “We’re literally 50 yards from campus.”

College Manor also prides itself on uniqueness, Curth said. They were built when “a spice of variety” was a part of life, making the units exciting and fun, he said.

Curth said he has less than half a dozen apartments remaining, mainly studios, beginning at $398 per month.

Complexes such as Cedarview Apartments, 1368-1412 E. Grand River Ave., Norwood Apartments, 1328-1332 E. Grand River Ave., Stoddard Apartments, 134-144 Stoddard Ave., 2900 Place Apartments, 2900 Northwind Drive, and DTN Management communities still have apartments for rent and advertise proximity to campus.

Other places like Campus Village, 1151 Michigan Ave., pride themselves not only on location but on the amenities offered.

Not only is Campus Village close to campus, said property manager Angie Stube, but the fully furnished apartments have many features, including a washer and dryer in each unit.

Stube said there are only seven apartments left, ranging from $705 to $910 a month per person.

According to www.campusvillage.com, parking is available for everyone, and a community center with a game room, lounge, fitness center, computer center and tanning booth are free for resident use. All tenants are also provided with a free Capital Area Transportation Area bus pass, she said.

Places such as The Club at Chandler Crossings, 3850 Coleman Road, Castle Pointe Apartments, 3075 Endenhall Way, and Abbott Place, 2501 Abbot Road, also pride themselves on offering several amenities.

Even if students haven’t begun looking yet or made a decision, there is something available for all types of students around campus.

“It may not be the A+ property that they wanted,” Hagan said. “But there will always be something.”

Check out other locations with openings, such as Homestead Apartments, 426 W. Lake Lansing Road, or Ville Montée Apartments, 301 Rampart Way. The dorms also are currently allowing students to sign up for rooms.
