Team refuels with shutout over Broncos

After Sunday’s 1-0 loss in double overtime to Penn State, the MSU men’s soccer team dropped down to at least third in the Big Ten. But the Spartans proved they could still compete with a 4-0 win against Western Michigan on Wednesday at Old College Field. The Spartans (9-3-1, 3-2 Big Ten) controlled the game from the start, but could not get the ball into the net. Junior forward Brett Konley fired three shots without nailing a goal before the Spartans were able to score. “We were scared our offense wasn’t going to come out that well,” sophomore forward Thomas Trivelloni said.

New offensive approach bringing results

It’s not an uncommon hockey strategy, but it seems to have penetrated the top-ranked Spartans’ consciousness more than usual in the early stages of this season. “Just get the puck to the net and see what happens,” junior left wing Brian Maloney repeated again and again after practice Monday. The Spartans won’t call it their season motto, but it’s close.

Keith named rookie of the week

The CCHA named freshman defenseman Duncan Keith the league’s Rookie of the Week for his two-assist effort against Ferris State on Saturday. Keith, from Penticton, British Columbia, is tied for the team lead with six points this season.

VOLLEYBALL

Team looks for revenge, state flag, victory against U-M

When the Michigan Wolverines and the Spartan volleyball team square off at 7 p.m. today at Jenison Field House, both teams’ coaches and players will have plenty to think about. A previous match, a state flag, conference position and bragging rights will all be on the line. The Spartans (11-6, 4-6 Big Ten) dropped the final three games to lose 3-2 to the Wolverines (10-7, 6-4) on Oct.

Lineup changes may stick

Halfway through the Big Ten schedule, Spartan volleyball head coach Chuck Erbe isn’t too pleased with where his team is.“I really figured we’d be one of the top three teams in the Big Ten,” Erbe said, “But now we’re part of that logjam in the middle.”So, instead of waiting for some of the Spartans’ (11-6, 4-6 Big Ten) inconsistencies to work themselves out, Erbe decided to take action before Saturday’s match with No.

Mens basketball tickets still on sale

The deadline for student basketball season tickets will be extended, MSU Assistant Athletics Director John Lewandowski said Monday. Student season ticket packages cost $152 for 16 games. The change of deadline, which was originally set for Monday, is a result of a low number of ticket requests this season.

BASKETBALL

Vincent continues legacy

When MSU freshman walk-on guard Jayson Vincent enters practice at Breslin Center each day and looks to the rafters, he’s reminded of his father. Vincent, who came to MSU from Mason High School, is the son of Lansing legend Jay Vincent, a member of the 1979 MSU basketball national champion team and the fifth-leading scorer in MSU history with 1,914 career points. The family ties don’t end there - he’s also the nephew of MSU’s sixth leading all-time scorer, Sam Vincent, who played in the early 1980s and scored 1,861 points. Coming from a strong MSU lineage is a lot of pressure, Vincent said.

Youthful team fulfilling coachs rebuilding vision, going to NCAAs

A bid in a NCAA tournament may not seem like a major milestone, but compared to virtual nonexistence two years ago, the MSU women’s tennis team will take it. Four players from the team have received invitations to compete in the NCAA regional tournament Thursday through Sunday in Madison, Wisc. Surprisingly, the oldest player among the four is a sophomore, Caroline Lay. But looking at the makeup of the team, it’s no surprise.

Injuries cant ruin Van Dyke

Minneapolis - Things have been rough for me lately. I took the toughest midterm of my life Friday morning,Then about an hour later, I began an 11-hour Midwest highway trek with my fellow State Newsers to cover the MSU-Minnesota game. Then shortly after the Spartans disappointing 28-19 loss Saturday, I found out my girlfriend didn’t receive the flowers I bought her - so much for a little bit of sweetness on Sweetest Day.

Defense, goaltending tie up bulldogs

The top-ranked Spartans took care of business on the final date of their four-game season-opening homestand with a 2-0 win over Ferris State on Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena.Goals from senior right wing Adam Hall and freshman center Ash Goldie provided plenty of support for junior goaltender Ryan Miller, who made 23 saves Saturday and recorded his second shutout of the season.“We were up against a high-speed team that was getting a lot of chances,” said Miller, who earned his 20th career shutout.

Gophers running game surprises, beats team

Minneapolis - Minnesota’s 6-foot-3 wide receiver Ron Johnson was on the cover of the game program in MSU’s 28-19 loss to Minnesota in the Metrodome. Maybe his smaller teammates Marion Barber III and Tellis Redmon should have been. Granted, Johnson had four catches for 73 yards and a touchdown, was a preseason All-American and is the school’s all-time leader in receptions with 176. But in Saturday’s win over MSU, Johnson took the backseat to 5-foot-11 Barber and 6-foot Redmon, who both had late fourth quarter touchdown runs to regain the lead and seal a much-needed conference victory. Barber had 158 yards on 15 carries and Redmon had 134 yards on 22 carries. Substituting both running backs made a difference, especially late in the game, Redmon said. “The mixing up of Marion and I was good because it was the small things that made the difference,” Redmon said.
