Prognosticators

The weather outside is frightful; but these prognosticators are so delightful. And since we don’t actually want to endure the rain and watch the games, let them prog, let them prog, let them prog!

4 Spartans honored by Big Ten for efforts last week

After being named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for three straight weeks, senior running back Javon Ringer wasn’t able to earn a fourth one this week. Ringer racked up 198 yards on 44 carries and recorded a touchdown in the Spartans’ 42-29 victory over Indiana on Saturday, but didn’t do enough to win over Northwestern quarterback C.J. Bacher.

Students missing out on good thing

There’s nothing more exciting you could possibly be doing on a Sunday afternoon than watching the MSU’s women’s soccer team. And yes, I’m serious. That’s written correctly.

Dombrowski's bad offseason reason for failure

Sports fans across the state are still buzzing about the Detroit Lions’ decision to fire general manager Matt Millen. His termination was a mini-miracle of sorts for Detroit fans, who spent seven years watching Millen drag their team from the brink of respectability to the dungeon of the NFC North.

FOOTBALL

Swenson stars in MSU's 42-29 win at Indiana

In what has become a season-long trend, the MSU football team went into Saturday’s game convinced that special teams would make or break the game. Although MSU’s special teams saw its fair share of dropped punts and missed blocking assignments against Indiana, junior kicker Brett Swenson and sophomore punter Aaron Bates did their share to ensure MSU’s 42-29 win.

VOLLEYBALL

Spartans bust Breslin

Drawing more than 9,000 fans at Breslin Center during the weekend, the MSU volleyball team set the school’s single-game attendance record while picking up a pair of 3-1 victories over Ohio State and No. 21 Michigan. Aided by more than 1,500 students, many coming from the Izzone campout at Munn Field, the goal to “Bust Breslin” was achieved when the team drew 5,335 fans to Saturday’s matchup against U-M.

SPORTS

Young Spartans compete in only home meet of the season

The women’s tennis team started its season this weekend with the 19th annual Spartan Invitational. MSU played host to seven other schools — Akron, Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Louisville, Marshall and Toledo — in a round-robin tournament where each school played three other schools.

FOOTBALL

Spartans emerge winners in sloppy game

Bloomington, Ind. — It could have been the back breaker that brought out those dreaded words: Same Old Spartans. MSU had pinned the Indiana Hoosiers inside their own five. The down was third-and-seven. The Spartan defense was hungry for a safety, already leading 34-29 late in the third quarter.
