Tough Illinois defense not a matchup for Spartans

The Illinois men’s basketball team finally has its identity back. After a pair of disappointing seasons, during which the Fighting Illini finished with a combined 14-20 Big Ten record despite a roster simmering with experience and talent, they are back to doing what they do best: playing tenacious defense.

I’ll never forget the day I bought my first “goalie helmet.” It was my pee-wee season of hockey in my small northeastern Michigan town and my father had agreed to pay for half the helmet if I could save up enough to pay for the other half.

Rivalry week has arrived for the MSU women’s basketball team. The Spartans head to Ann Arbor for the first of two matchups with Michigan tonight and hope to fair better than their last trip to Crisler Arena, a 64-55 U-M win.

Spartans show promise for 2009 in bowl

The MSU football team held Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford in check during the first half of the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1 in Orlando, Fla. In the second half, however, Stafford showed the MSU defense why he is regarded by many to be the top pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

MSU gymnastics team finishes third in four-team meet

The balance beam was the MSU gymnastics team’s undoing in its season opener Friday night at Jenison Field House. No. 17 MSU finished the four-team meet in third place behind No. 8 Michigan and No. 16 Illinois while beating Western Michigan for the 54th straight time.
