Women's basketball squeaks past IPFW 62-56

In a game marked by physical play and inconsistent defense, the MSU women’s basketball team pulled out a 62-56 win against the IPFW Mastadons on Tuesday at Breslin Center. The Spartans (2-1 overall, 0-0 Big Ten) relied heavily on three-point shots early in their home opener, jumping out to a 14-6 lead on the strength of treys by senior guard Taylor Alton and guards Kiana Johnson and Porsche Poole. Senior forward Lykendra Johnson dominated the boards on the way to recording her 18th career double-double.

Football team close to securing place in conference championship

The No. 12 MSU football team (8-2 overall, 5-1 Big Ten) set out at the beginning of the season to play a 14-game season, and with two regular season games to go, the team’s goals are within reach. Because of the Spartans’ 37-21 victory over Iowa this weekend, they’re one step closer to their goals with a confidence boost from their second win on the road this season, head coach Mark Dantonio said at his weekly press conference Tuesday. “When you look at this football game, I thought it helped us control our own destiny,” he said.

Men's and women's golf pick up pair of recruits

MSU men’s and women’s golf each signed two golfers for the 2012-13 season last weekend. Kendall Allen from Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Gabby Yurik from Stoney Creek High School in Rochester, Mich., signed with women’s golf, and Sean Friel from Brother Rice High School in Rochester Hills, Mich., and Mitch Rutledge from Whitfield School in St.

Women's basketball to host home opener

In the middle of a 7-day stretch that sees the MSU women’s basketball team play four times, the Spartans are set to open their home season against IPFW Tuesday night. The Spartans (1-1 overall, 0-0 Big Ten) are coming off a weekend split in the Iona Tip-Off Tournament played in New Rochelle, N.Y., in which they were treated to a strong debut by freshman forward Becca Mills, who was named to the all-tournament team and the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

Volleyball receives 3 National Letters of Intent

While the MSU volleyball team is approaching the end of the regular season and must begin to think about its postseason chances, the Spartans already are looking toward their future. Head coach Cathy George and the Spartans received National Letters of Intent from three recruits to play for MSU in 2012.

Wrestling competes at MSU Open

More than 600 wrestlers from more than 29 schools throughout the country attended the the MSU Open on Saturday at Jenison Field House, competing in either the open or the freshman/sophomore division.

Hockey team prepares for Western Michigan

As the MSU hockey team prepares to take on No. 5 ranked Western Michigan, being a mentally tough opponent is just as important as being physically tough. After a week off from game action, the Spartans will open up a two-game series on the road this Friday and Saturday at the unfriendly confines of Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo.
