It may not have been as statistically sexy as the blowout win last week, but MSU took a crash course in adversity on their way to defeating Bowling Green, 28-17, on Saturday. “The thing that impressed me about our football team is that we did handle adversity,” head coach Mark Dantonio said. “We didn’t just go in there and all of a sudden quit playing and hang our heads. We kept coming back and someone kept making a play.”

If the MSU pass rush needed a slogan, it might be, “What a difference a year makes.” The Spartans recorded 16 sacks in 2006 – just two more than last-place Indiana in the Big Ten. On Saturday, though, MSU collected seven sacks to bring its season total to 12 in two games.

Caulcrick honors past with present

Last season, all it took was a 30-yard run by then-junior running back Jehuu Caulcrick to put the Spartans ahead of No. 12-ranked Notre Dame, 37-21, with just less than six minutes remaining in the third quarter. MSU was in control of the game.

Deacon, MSU excel in play

It was a good weekend for MSU field hockey — especially for sophomore back Jeamie Deacon. Starting off with a dominating 5-1 win over Miami (Ohio) last Friday and keeping the momentum going with a 3-0 victory over Boston University the following Sunday, the team upped their record to an unbeaten 4-0.

The NFL season officially kicks off tonight with the defending Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts taking on the 2006 Cinderella New Orleans Saints, and the answer to “Are you ready for some football?” is probably a sarcastic “duh” for many fans. DeMartin poised for stellar year

Doug DeMartin has had an up-and-down career at MSU. As a freshman in 2005, DeMartin scored seven goals, including two game-winners, with three assists. But those numbers tailed off to two goals and three assists last season. Now, it appears DeMartin has put that behind him and things are looking up again – he scored two goals in the season’s opening two games this past weekend. Both of them were game-winners.

Big Ten network launches on campus

The Big Ten Network couldn’t have scripted a better first weekend. When the University of Michigan lost its home opener against Appalachian State University in a historical upset Saturday, the network received hours of free publicity when other networks broadcasted interviews, highlights and press conferences from the channel.
