Spartans face up against Eagles for Bowl, both teams bringing in heat

One team held the No. 2 ranking before sputtering down the stretch, while the other team finished the regular season with consecutive wins for the first time since 1999. Here comes the sun

At 8:18 p.m. Sunday night, a voice from the PA system interrupted head coach Mark Dantonio during the football team’s bowl selection press conference to make it official. The voice belonged to Tony Martin, the chairman of the Champs Sports Bowl selection committee, and he invited the Spartans (7-5) to play No. 14 Boston College (10-3) on Dec. 28 in Orlando, Fla.

BASKETBALL

Spartans top Clemson in Big Ten/ACC Challenge

The MSU women’s basketball team finally came to play in the first half. Sophomore guard Allyssa DeHaan’s layup 45 seconds in paired with freshman guard Brittney Thomas’s underhand layup in the midst of a 19-7 run would set the pace for a comfortable 12-point lead heading into the locker room.

Jones scores freshman accolades

Freshman linebacker Greg Jones, whose 73 tackles led the MSU football team and all Big Ten freshmen in the regular season, was named first-team Freshman All-American by Scout.com and Rivals.com.
