Softball signs pitcher Zalewski to National Letter of Intent

On Monday, the MSU softball team signed 6-foot-1 pitcher Kristina Zalewski of Ann Arbor and Saline High School to a National Letter of Intent. Zalewski joins incoming freshmen third basemen Sarah Gutknech, pitcher Valerie Kaff, catcher Kassidy Kujawa and shortstop and center fielder McKenna Stephens to the 2014 recruiting class. Softball head coach Jacquie Joseph is excited about the signing. “She is hard-throwing, good-sized kid,” Joseph said.

Former MSU hockey player Torey Krug has so far had a storybook start to his NHL career. After being called up from the AHL’s Providence Bruins into the thick of Stanley Cup playoff hockey on May 16, the 22-year-old rookie has outplayed many of the veterans.

BASEBALL

MSU baseball sweeps doubleheader against Central Michigan

MSU won both games of the doubleheader against Central Michigan Tuesday at Theunissen Stadium in Mount Pleasant. The Spartans held on in the first of two against Central to win the postponed Clash at Comerica, 5-4. MSU hopes to maintain its momentum from the doubleheader sweep into the Big Ten finale against Penn State this weekend. Sophomore right fielder Jimmy Pickens had a big Tuesday, Pickens went 3-7 with 5 RBIs in the two wins against Central.

Column: It's win or go home for MSU baseball

Following a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Illinois on Senior Day, MSU maintained control of the No. 6 spot in the Big Ten standings. However, MSU fell out of sixth place into seventh after winning only one out of three against Iowa this past weekend.
