West Michigan beats Lugnuts behind Baugh

COMSTOCK PARK - The second half of the Lansing Lugnuts’ season began this weekend, but the Lugnuts failed to climb out of the basement of the Midwest League’s Eastern Division by dropping three of four games to West Michigan. After posting a 28-45 record in the first half of the season, the standings were reset this weekend as Lansing (1-3) capped the series with a 4-1 loss to the Whitecaps on Sunday in front of 8,963 fans at Old Kent Park.

Wyandotte goalie inks Letter of Intent with U

MSU hockey head coach Ron Mason announced Friday the signing of 6-foot-2, 190-pound goaltender Matt Migliaccio for the 2001-02 season. Migliaccio, 20, was a member of the America West Hockey League’s Bozeman Ice Dogs last season, posting a 20-12-2 record with a 2.88 goals against average, a .913 saves percentage and three shutouts. Putting his pen to the paper of his National Letter of Intent was not a problem for Migliaccio. “It’s awesome,” the Wyandotte native said.

Spartan recruit picked by Hurricanes

Kevin Estrada may have heard his name called in the NHL Entry Draft this weekend, but he still plans on playing hockey in East Lansing next season. In the third round of Saturday’s 2001 NHL Entry Draft in Sunrise, Fla., the Carolina Hurricanes selected the speedy left wing with the 91st overall pick. But that won’t stop the 5-foot-11, 185-pound 19-year-old from playing in Munn Ice Arena next season. “The (Hurricanes) want me to go to school and develop,” Estrada said Sunday from Florida.

Michigans top high school QB prospect considering U

Farmington Hills Harrison senior Drew Stanton, Michigan’s top high school quarterback according to AllianceSports, is seriously considering verbally committing to MSU for the 2002 season. Stanton, who led Harrison to the Class A state title in his junior season last year, told The State News on Tuesday that the four colleges that top his list are MSU, UCLA, Oregon and Florida.

Shortstop Luis Montanez and pitcher Aaron Krawiec were the only Lugnuts selected to compete in the annual game. Montanez will be the East All-Star team’s starting shortstop.

Lugnuts trail behind in series with Whitecaps

LANSING - After splitting the first half of a four-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps in Grand Rapids this weekend, the Lansing Lugnuts dropped the third game of the series 4-2 Sunday at Oldsmobile Park. The Whitecaps (26-28) shut out the Lugnuts (22-35) 10-0 Friday, while Lansing won 6-3 Saturday after it overcame a two-run deficit in the eighth inning. West Michigan didn’t waste any time getting those two runs back Sunday - taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Lansing hitting coach Mike Micucci said the Lugnuts were not prepared to play and were unable to recover from the runs scored in the first inning. “Sometimes all it takes is one inning and today that’s what happened in the first couple innings,” Micucci said. “It took us a couple of innings to get into the game, and we couldn’t make up the difference.” In the top of the fourth inning, the Lugnuts cut into the Whitecaps’ four-run lead with two runs of their own, when first baseman Blair Barbier (1-for-4) loaded the bases on an infield single, extending his hitting streak to 13 games.

Decathlete Terek places fourth at NCAA Track Championships

MSU junior decathlete Paul Terek earned the All-American tag for his efforts at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships last week in Eugene, Ore.Terek’s first-place performance in the decathlon pole vault and his third-place finish in the 1,500-meter run helped him earn fourth overall at the competition, with 7,645 points.The MSU co-captain, who also competed in the pole vault, stood in eighth place following day one of the decathlon.
