The MSU women’s basketball team lost 59-58 in a heartbreaker Saturday to Florida Gulf Coast on a last-second free throw by Sarah Hansen. Senior forward Lykendra Johnson finished with her second double-double of the season, scoring 15 points while grabbing 16 rebounds in a losing effort. The Spartans fell to 3-2 on the season and will return to action Tuesday night when they travel to Milwaukee.
The MSU women’s cross country team will be running in its 11th straight NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday in Terre Haute, Ind. The Spartans qualified for the championships after placing second with 77 points at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships on Nov.
The MSU wrestling team fell in its first dual meet of the season to Eastern Michigan on Friday, 20-16. Although the Spartans (0-1) lost the meet, five Spartan wrestlers were able to pick up a win. Winning for the Spartans were junior 149-pounder Dan Osterman, senior 165-pounder Anthony Jones Jr., senior 184-pounder Ian Hinton, senior 197-pounder Tyler Dickenson and sophomore heavyweight Michael McClure. The MSU women’s basketball team received a National Letter of Intent from Cass Tech guard Branndais Agee, head coach Suzy Merchant announced Wednesday. The 5-foot-11 guard from Detroit is a four-star recruit nationally ranked as the fifth best guard and 27th best overall player by ESPN’s Hoopgurlz. “She is one of the best defensive players in the country, which will allow her to be impactful from the minute she steps on campus,” Merchant said in a statement to the MSU athletics department. Agee and fellow incoming guard Mariah Harris give MSU the 19th ranked recruiting class in the country, according to Dan Olsen of Collegiate Girls Basketball Report.
After his career game in the No. 12 Spartans’ 37-21 victory over Iowa, senior tight end Brian Linthicum was named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week on Wednesday. Against the Hawkeyes, Linthicum set a career high for receptions and receiving yards with five catches for 71 yards, and four of the five resulted in first downs for MSU.
