Spartans turn game around late, beat Oakland

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — It wasn’t pretty, but the No. 5 MSU men’s basketball team got the job done. MSU committed 17 turnovers and shot just 42 percent, but they came out on top against Oakland 67-63 Saturday afternoon at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Senior center Adreian Payne and junior forward Branden Dawson each had double-doubles on the night, while senior guard Keith Appling led the Spartans in scoring with 21 points, 17 of them coming in the second half. Payne had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Dawson added 16 points and 13 rebounds.

MSU enters final game before holiday break against No. 4 Ferris State

Coming off potentially its best series of the season, MSU (5-8-1, 0-1-1-1 B1G) will look to keep the momentum going in its final contest before the holiday break as in-state foe No. 4 Ferris State (13-2-3, 10-0-2 WCHA) travels to Munn Ice Arena Saturday night. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. The matchup between the two former Central Collegiate Hockey Association members will have extra significance, also serving as the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game with former MSU head coach and athletic director Ron Mason being recognized.

Drew Valentine facing familiar foe as MSU grad assistant

After his senior season as an Oakland Grizzly came to a close, Drew Valentine had a tough decision to make — go overseas in hopes of starting a basketball career, or join MSU’s basketball team as a graduate assistant. Already suffering an ACL tear, a torn meniscus and a removed tumor in his pinky during his career, he decided he had too many bumps and bruises to continue playing basketball.

Report: MSU fans snapped up Rose Bowl tix through Stanford athletics

The Stanford Daily is reporting that some MSU fans might be to blame for rapid sales of the university’s allotment of Rose Bowl Tickets. The paper reports that some MSU fans said they took advantage of an offer from the Stanford athletics department granting advance access to up to four guaranteed Rose Bowl tickets if a deposit was made for 2014 Stanford football season tickets.

Narduzzi named nation's top assistant

After 13 games of commanding one of the nation’s most feared defenses, defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi was named as Broyles Award winner. Narduzzi is the first MSU coach to win the award that is given to the nation’s top assistant coach in its 18 year history.

Dozens of supporters welcome Spartans home

Sunday morning, 8-year-old Cody Ream and his 7-year-old brother Dylan Ream couldn’t wait to see sophomore quarterback Connor Cook. However, this time they wouldn’t be seeing him on a football field or on the TV — they would be seeing him step off the team plane on the tarmac of Capital Regional International Airport.

HALFTIME: MSU leads Ohio State, 17-10, in Big Ten Championship Game

No. 10 MSU came out swinging behind the arm of sophomore quarterback Connor Cook before No. 2 Ohio State found its footing and bounced back to make it a 17-10 game heading after one half of play in the Big Ten Championship Game. The Spartans took advantage of two pass interference flags on the game’s opening drive, which resulted in a 40-yard field goal from freshman kicker Michael Geiger. MSU also claimed the first big play of the night, a 72-yard bomb from Cook to junior wide receiver Keith Mumphery, sending the portion of the crowd clad in green into a frenzy. Cook threw another jaw-dropping pass to junior Tony Lippett for a 33-yard score, giving the Spartans an early 17-0 lead and MSU appeared to be in command. The Buckeyes’ explosive offense was stifled by MSU on their first three drives, generating just 36 yards.
