2008 was year to remember for MSU soccer

After two successful 2008 soccer seasons for MSU, it’s only right to give credit where credit is due. The men’s team finished 13-5-2 and was eliminated in its first NCAA Tournament game, yet the team played a lot harder and looked even better than those statistics showed all year long. The Spartans won the Big Ten regular-season title for the first time in program history and also won the Big Ten Tournament.

MSU aims to extend shutout streak

The MSU men’s soccer team hasn’t given up a goal in 11 hours and 51 minutes of game time. Ironically, the last goal scored on the Spartans came on a penalty kick against Illinios-Chicago — the team MSU will host in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at 1 p.m. today at DeMartin Stadium at Old College Field.

Defense wins championships

If you don’t allow goals, you can’t lose. That’s the motto the MSU men’s soccer team has been living by this season. And it’s working perfectly for the Spartans, as they have racked up seven straight shutouts. With an established scorer in Doug DeMartin up top, head coach Joe Baum has been able to focus his attention on molding the defensive unit into a back line that has been impenetrable of late.

DeMartin earns academic honor

For the first time in the history of the men’s soccer program, a Spartan has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American First Team. Senior forward Doug DeMartin earned the award Wednesday after being selected to the Academic All-District IV first team, which made him eligible for All-American recognition.

DeMartin, Steinlage lead MSU to tournament title

It’s official. The MSU men’s soccer team is the class of the Big Ten. Two weeks after clinching the first regular season Big Ten championship in MSU history, the Spartans defeated Indiana 1-0 in the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament in Madison, Wisc., to win their first Big Ten Tournament championship since 2004.

Breakout season ended by Irish

Blistering cold winds whipped through Notre Dame’s Alumni Field as the MSU women’s soccer team waited for someone to start heating up. But the only source of warmth that smashed through the ice cold tundra was Notre Dame’s Rose Augustin, who scored the contest’s game winning — and only — goal of the afternoon en route to a 1-0 victory Sunday, knocking the Spartans out of the NCAA Tournament in the second round.

'Extraordinary' defense kept MSU in game

The MSU women’s soccer defense held No. 1 ranked and undefeated Notre Dame off the board until the 72nd minute. But the lone goal for the Fighting Irish was enough for them to earn the 1-0 victory and end the Spartans’ season.

Hertel's flip throw harder than it appears

Senior defender David Hertel brings a valuable weapon to the men’s soccer team’s offensive arsenal: He can throw the ball a mile. Hertel’s ability to clear a great distance with his throw-ins comes from his mastery of the flip throw. He takes five or six big strides and does the flip by putting the ball on the ground and whipping his body around to create momentum that sends the ball flying out of his hands like a missile.

Rested Spartans await Big Ten Tournament

The MSU men’s soccer team had two main objectives coming into this season. First, they wanted to win the Big Ten regular season title — something that had never been done in the program’s history. The squad checked that one off the list Nov. 2 when they defeated Northwestern 1-0.

It was announced Sunday the MSU women’s soccer team will open the Big Ten Tournament at 8 p.m. Thursday against Illinois in Iowa City, Iowa — the first obstacle to the program’s first Big Ten Tournament title.
