Cartwright expands leadership as Spartan

When there is so much pressure resting on you, the best thing to do is relax. Even if you have to throw yourself in the air and flip over twice. Even if you have to tumble on a 4-foot-high and 4-inch wide surface. Even if you have to run toward a still object as fast as you can, like MSU junior gymnast Alina Cartwright does every day. As MSU’s gymnastics season gets underway, Cartwright is focusing on relaxing to reach her goals of placing and medaling at the Big Ten championship, as well as at nationals. Cartwright’s lofty goals date back to her career as a high school gymnast.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Minnesota leading MSU by 5 at halftime

Minnesota walked into Breslin Center as one of the nation’s worse shooting teams, hitting 43.5 percent of its shots from the field. That has been anything but the case so far for the Gophers, as they are lighting up MSU’s defense from behind the arc, shooting 7-of-12 on 3-pointers to give them a 41-36 halftime lead. Gopher forward Malik Smith is doing most of the damage on the court with 11 points, nine of which came from 3-pointers.

Hockey loses to Ohio State, 5-3, after Buckeye comeback

In a valiant effort by junior forward Matt Berry, MSU fell to Ohio State on Friday night at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio, 5-3. MSU blew a 3-2 lead, giving up three third-period goals — including two within the first 90 seconds of the period. Buckeye junior forward Ryan Dzingel had three goals on the night, including the final two goals of the game to finish off MSU (6-10-2, 0-2-1-1 Big Ten). Ohio State (11-6-0, 1-2-0 Big Ten) found the back of the net first on Friday night, with senior forward Alex Szczechura scoring only 4:45 into the first period on the power play.
