Terek resets school decathlon record; Izzo to help coach U.S. Goodwill team

The men’s and women’s track teams both finished in the bottom half of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Ind., this weekend, but each had some bright spots. Senior Paul Terek was named the 2001 Big Ten Athlete of the Meet for his record-breaking performance. Terek set a school record and a Big Ten Outdoor Championship record with 7,695 points in the decathlon, automatically qualifying him for the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Eugene, Ore. Terek already held the school record since 1999 and broke it earlier this season with 7,441 points.

Track teams prep for weekend conference championship meets

The MSU men’s and women’s track and field teams will be competing in the 2001 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championship this weekend in Bloomington, Ind.Men’s coach Darroll Gatson looks forward to strong competition from his athletes during the weekend, while women’s coach Angela Goodman looks to use the weekend as a stepping stone for her program.Gatson has high expectations of his team, but there is one standard he has set for his athletes - to compete.“Our goal is to be very competitive,” Gatson said.

Crew boat makes NCAA championships

MSU women’s crew coach Bebe Bryans predicted correctly Sunday when she said the first varsity eight boat would have a good chance of making the crew national championships.Bryans said the team was contacted about its NCAA at-large berth right before practice Tuesday and everyone was “obviously really excited.”The varsity women’s crew team has been in competition for four years and has made nationals in all four of its seasons.

Sophomore outfielder breaks school single-season hit record

After spending the entire year chasing MSU’s 7-year-old single-season record for hits, sophomore outfielder Bob Malek finally got over the hump Saturday during the second-to-last game of the season.After tying the record Friday, Malek’s 85th and record-breaking hit came during the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Penn State, when he hit a single up the middle in MSU’s 8-7 loss.“He’s a team player all the way,” MSU head baseball coach Ted Mahan said.

Lugnuts drop two out of three during weekend

LANSING - It was a game that a mother would love.Although his team lost to the Burlington Bees 9-7 on Mother’s Day, Lansing Lugnut manager Julio Garcia said the players, as well as their mothers, should not be disappointed with the performance.The 16-run, 23-hit barrage started right away when Lugnut first baseman Blair Barbier (2-for-4) drove in infielder Adam Morrisey (1-for-3) with a first-inning single.

Womens crew boat waits to hear NCAA fate; golf qualifies for nationals

The MSU women’s crew team qualified all four varsity boats Saturday for Sunday’s Grande Final at the Lexus Central Sprints Regional Championships. But the Spartans finished fifth in Sunday’s competition with a total of 14 points, as Michigan won the competition with 120 points. The first varsity eight boat had the best showing with a time of 6:42.4 and a fourth-place finish in the final. The second varsity eight boat finished the final with a time of 6:55.6.

SN sports writers reflect on past year (5)

I had never been on the actual field of Spartan Stadium before. So when I got to help cover a football game this season and learned that the press was allowed there for the last few minutes of the game, I was stoked. And luckily for me, the game I chose to cover was one of the most exciting I’ve seen in my three years here. I’m not sure why MSU has a special rivalry with Notre Dame, but on that Saturday afternoon, there was no doubt that pride and bragging rights lay clearly on the line with the game. We had beat the Irish for the past three seasons, something they weren’t really used to, and they seemed determine to not let it happen again.

Spartans change broadcasting company

MSU football and basketball games should be easier to tune into next year, now that MSU has signed a four-year contract with CBS Radio/Infinity Broadcasting in Detroit. Starting next season, all MSU football games will be broadcast on WXYT Radio, (Team 1270 AM) and all MSU basketball games will be broadcast on WWJ Radio (950 AM). WXYT will also host weekly call-in shows with football head coach Bobby Williams and men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo.

Last-place Lugnuts return to Oldsmobile Park on Sunday

The last time the Lugnuts traveled to South Bend, Ind., both of their games against the Silver Hawks were canceled because of a bitter mix of cold and rain.But forecasts for their four-game series with the Silver Hawks this weekend predict sunny skies and warmer temperatures.And Lugnuts manager Julio Garcia is hoping the spring sunshine thaws his team’s frigid start.The Lugnuts (4-13) and Silver Hawks square off tonight and Saturday in South Bend and then return to Lansing for games Sunday and Monday.

SN sports writers reflect on past year (1)

March 22, 2001. A day that will live in infamy. On this date I wrote a column that ran in The State News’ NCAA Final Four special section and the Arizona Wildcat, the University of Arizona’s student newspaper. In the column, I trashed the entire Arizona basketball team and program while fully displaying my Spartan pride, which single-handedly angered the entire Arizona campus - in fact, before tipoff I received roughly 165 hate e-mails from Arizona basketball fans from across the country. Those fans called me things like a white, pasty Midwesterner, Mr. Fatfield and even names that are far too inappropriate to be published in a newspaper.

Hockey team gets new jerseys

The MSU hockey team will be looking a little more traditional next season, sports information Director Mike Eidelbes said.The team’s jerseys will be newly designed by Nike with a darker green, to match MSU’s other athletic teams, and a more predominant use of black, Eidelbes said.Eidelbes didn’t have specific details of the new design, but said fans should expect a classic look, following the likes of the Team Canada jerseys.

Womens team looks to keep streak

The women’s golf team is red-hot heading into Gopher-country for this weekend’s Big Ten Championship.The Spartans, ranked 17th by MasterCard and 23rd by Golfweek, won the Indiana Invitational on April 8 and placed second out of 16 teams at the Lady Buckeye Invitational last weekend, falling one stroke short of host Ohio State.Now, they set their sites on a conference title.“I think our odds are very good,” junior Emily Bastel said.
