Fans reflect on baseball history with Harwell

More than 150 fans, many donning caps with the Old English “D,” had the opportunity to ask a legend for one last “Long Gone.”Ernie Harwell, the voice of the Detroit Tigers was on campus Monday signing copies of his new book, “Ernie Harwell: My 60 Years in Baseball.”Harwell, who has broadcast Tiger baseball for more than 42 years, met and took photos with his fans from the Lansing area in the Castle Board Room at MSU-Detroit College of Law Building.Communication junior Nick Kovacic said he called his father, Mike, to tell him that Harwell was coming to campus.

Ernie Harwell just began his 55th season of broadcasting major league baseball, and today the hall-of-famer will share some of his memories at a book signing on campus. Harwell will make an appearance at MSU-Detroit College of Law from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

U splits weekend series with Hoosiers

With a win Sunday, the MSU baseball team salvaged a split in its four-game series with Big Ten leader Indiana at Kobs Field.The Spartans (22-8 overall, 6-5 Big Ten) started slow Sunday, but outlasted the Hoosiers (26-8, 8-4) 10-6.

Leading up to the playing of the Masters, the attempt at “Tiger-proofing” Augusta National generated a lot of buzz. Clearly, if Tiger-proofing really meant giving Woods a better chance at winning, then the proofing was a success. Honestly, can you imagine the meeting of Augusta directors deciding to make the course tougher by lengthening it?

U sends 2 runners to NCAA Championships

Two distance runners will represent MSU at the 2002 NCAA Championships in Baton Rouge, La. Sophomores Jamie Krzyminski and Michelle Carson will compete in the 10,000-meter race at the championships May 29-June 1. The two qualified for the championships at the Stanford Invitational on March 29.

Spartans look to continue winning streak at home

After a successful road trip, the MSU softball team brings its season-best nine-game winning streak back to East Lansing. With momentum under their belts, the Spartans (20-21 overall, 3-3 Big Ten) host Wisconsin (21-13, 4-4) at 4 p.m.

Lugnuts shut out at home

Lansing - A six-run barrage in the top of the fourth was more than enough cushion for Dayton, as the Dragons downed the Lansing Lugnuts 6-0 at Oldsmobile Park on Thursday evening. Dayton starting pitcher Brad Salmon (1-1) went eight scoreless innings in picking up the win, giving up just two hits while striking out five and walking none. Lansing manager Julio Garcia said there’s no question Salmon was the difference. “He really didn’t give us many good pitches to hit,” Garcia said.
