Women's basketball snaps five game losing streak in 63-56 win against Illinois

The women’s basketball team defeated Illinois, 63-54, winning their first game without freshman Jasmine Lumpkin — who started in 14 of the 16 games this season — on Thursday night, breaking their five-game losing streak. Lumpkin left the team for personal reasons. “People hit the panic button, and we only have seven kids to play the game,” head coach Suzy Merchant said.

Women's basketball looks to end losing streak

By Mayara Sanches msanches@statenews.com With the team's loss against Northwestern on Sunday women's basketball lost their fifth straight conference game. It's a record the Spartan women's basketball team is not too familiar with.  At least not in the last decade. Holding the longest streak, MSU has won 10 or more Big Ten games in the last 12 seasons, with a record of 140-58, second only to Ohio State during that span.

Izzo happy that the spring semester is starting

While students across campus may be slow to welcome the start of Spring semester, Tom Izzo is looking forward to it. “I think getting back focused in, getting in a routine, this was the longest period of time we’ve ever had off since I’ve been at Michigan State, a month,” Izzo said.

Freshman Jasmine Lumpkin leaves women's basketball team for personal reasons

Women’s basketball player Jasmine Lumpkin decided to leave the team due to personal reasons. The freshman’s decision is effective immediately, although she does not cite specific reasons of her termination. “We appreciate Jasmine’s contributions, and we wish her well in her future endeavors,” head coach Suzy Merchant told msuspartans.com. The guard and forward played 15 games this season, starting 14 of those times, she 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. MSU will return to the Breslin Center, without Lumpkin, when they host Illinois on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Finding an identity

By Tom Izzo's own admission, this is a transition team battling injuries. Key players have stepped into new leadership roles, and while the team has been competitive, losses have piled up. Going forward in the Big Ten season, the Spartans are still seeking a signature win.

Four years, four incredible comebacks

Times haven't always been this good in East Lansing. MSU football hasn't always been at the top of the mountain, they haven't always been competing for high level bowl games and they haven't always been able to take on top five programs.
