Top-10 recruiting class paying dividends for volleyball

With a top-10 recruiting class comes big expectations and the craving for immediate production. MSU volleyball compiled the No. 6-rated recruiting class last spring according to PrepVolleyball.com.The talented class has paid dividends for head coach Cathy George, whose team has caught a case of the injury bug early on this season.

Mark Dantonio on concussions — “We’re not going to put anybody in the game that we think is at risk.”

Head coach Mark Dantonio was back at the podium Tuesday to address Nebraska, redshirts and concussion protocol in light of the recent situation at Michigan.

Volleyball aims to improve conference record against Michigan in Ann Arbor on Tuesday

After splitting two games over the weekend to open up Big Ten season, MSU (8-5 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) will make the short trip to Ann Arbor to face Michigan (5-7 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) on Tuesday. Both the Spartans and Wolverines played Indiana and No. 15 Purdue this past weekend. MSU defeated Indiana in four sets and lost to Purdue in four sets. U-M lost to both Indiana and Purdue in five sets.

Women's tennis freshman Allie Baer adjusts to team play at MSU

Before stepping onto the MSU tennis court this season, freshman Allie Baer had never played on a tennis team. Her competition was always an individual sport, playing against other athletes from around the world. Baer’s family moved from Virginia Beach, Va. to Bradenton, Fla. to attend IMG Academy Pendleton School for high school. Prior to high school, Baer was home-schooled, so moving across the country and attending public school for the first time was an adjustment in itself.

Volleyball goes 1-1 over first weekend of Big Ten play

MSU (8-5 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) opened the conference portion of the season with a split in it’s two road games in the state of Indiana this past weekend. The Spartans defeated the Indiana Hoosiers (10-4 overall, 1-1 Big Ten), 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21) on Friday night and loss to No. 15 Purdue on Saturday night, 3-1 (22-25, 22-25, 28-26, 25-23).

Maryland defeats field hockey at home, 4-2

There was a big crowd on hand to watch No. 18 MSU field hockey (5-4 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) take on the No. 4 Maryland Terrapins on Sunday afternoon. With several Spartan athletes at the game, such as junior defensive end Shilique Calhoun and junior goalkeeper Jake Hildebrand, MSU was unable to get the performance it was looking for. After surrendering a 4-0 lead to Maryland, MSU scored two late goals to lessen the defeat to 4-2.
