After three road games over the past two weekends, women’s soccer will return to the friendly confines of DeMartin Stadium for a Thursday-Sunday set against two challenging teams.Iowa (8-3 overall, 3-2 Big Ten) will visit MSU (6-4-1 overall, 0-4-1 Big Ten) on Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
Even with the disappointment of two losses last weekend, there were still a few highlights that No. 20 MSU field hockey took away from it. And while the Spartans primary focus is their play, they took some time to enjoy themselves off the field this weekend.

MSU (8-6 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) fell short in it’s attempt to win on the road against in-state rival Michigan (6-7 overall, 1-2 Big Ten), losing in four sets (20-25, 25-22, 24-26, 23-25).It was a sloppy effort for both teams, who combined for 55 errors. MSU had 29 of those errors, 11 of which were service errors.

After two bye weeks following the Spartan Invitational, MSU cross country ran in Minneapolis, Minn. at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday. The No. 3 women’s team finished with a total of 66 points, putting them in first place, while the men had a total of 153 points, placing them at fourth.

The men’s soccer team went 2-0-1 over a span of three games in 10 days. The Spartans defeated Maryland 1-0 Sept. 19, and the team also defeated Bowling Green State 1-0 on Sept. 24 and tied Rutgers 0-0 on Sept. 28
Before stepping onto the MSU tennis court this season, freshman Allie Baer had never played on a tennis team. Her competition was always an individual sport, playing against other athletes from around the world. Baer’s family moved from Virginia Beach, Va. to Bradenton, Fla. to attend IMG Academy Pendleton School for high school. Prior to high school, Baer was home-schooled, so moving across the country and attending public school for the first time was an adjustment in itself.

A surge of students signed into the MSU Spartans website on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 20 to reserve their spot in the Izzone for men’s basketball upcoming season. With ticket sales soaring already, MSU Association of Future Alumni is working to plan this year’s Izzone Campout.

The women’s soccer team visited the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor on Friday night, and in front of a sellout crowd, lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in the game’s final minute.“I feel for the players,” head coach Tom Saxton said. “Once again, we were involved in a great college soccer match.”
There was a big crowd on hand to watch No. 18 MSU field hockey (5-4 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) take on the No. 4 Maryland Terrapins on Sunday afternoon. With several Spartan athletes at the game, such as junior defensive end Shilique Calhoun and junior goalkeeper Jake Hildebrand, MSU was unable to get the performance it was looking for. After surrendering a 4-0 lead to Maryland, MSU scored two late goals to lessen the defeat to 4-2.
The men’s soccer team (5-1-2 overall, 1-0-1 Big Ten) earned its fourth straight shutout, and seventh in eight games, after playing the Rutgers Scarlett Knights (4-4-1 overall, 2-1-1 Big Ten) to a 0-0 tie Sept. 28 in DeMartin Stadium in front of 1,220 fans according to the final box score.
MSU volleyball (8-5 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) played Purdue (12-2 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) tough on the road for four sets but could not bring home a victory, losing in four sets (22-25, 22-25, 28-26, 23-25).
