Mens basketball tickets still on sale
The deadline for student basketball season tickets will be extended, MSU Assistant Athletics Director John Lewandowski said Monday. Student season ticket packages cost $152 for 16 games. The change of deadline, which was originally set for Monday, is a result of a low number of ticket requests this season.

Vincent continues legacy
When MSU freshman walk-on guard Jayson Vincent enters practice at Breslin Center each day and looks to the rafters, he’s reminded of his father. Vincent, who came to MSU from Mason High School, is the son of Lansing legend Jay Vincent, a member of the 1979 MSU basketball national champion team and the fifth-leading scorer in MSU history with 1,914 career points. The family ties don’t end there - he’s also the nephew of MSU’s sixth leading all-time scorer, Sam Vincent, who played in the early 1980s and scored 1,861 points. Coming from a strong MSU lineage is a lot of pressure, Vincent said.

Youthful team fulfilling coachs rebuilding vision, going to NCAAs
A bid in a NCAA tournament may not seem like a major milestone, but compared to virtual nonexistence two years ago, the MSU women’s tennis team will take it. Four players from the team have received invitations to compete in the NCAA regional tournament Thursday through Sunday in Madison, Wisc. Surprisingly, the oldest player among the four is a sophomore, Caroline Lay. But looking at the makeup of the team, it’s no surprise.

The top-ranked Spartans took care of business on the final date of their four-game season-opening homestand with a 2-0 win over Ferris State on Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena.Goals from senior right wing Adam Hall and freshman center Ash Goldie provided plenty of support for junior goaltender Ryan Miller, who made 23 saves Saturday and recorded his second shutout of the season.“We were up against a high-speed team that was getting a lot of chances,” said Miller, who earned his 20th career shutout.

Gophers running game surprises, beats team
Minneapolis - Minnesota’s 6-foot-3 wide receiver Ron Johnson was on the cover of the game program in MSU’s 28-19 loss to Minnesota in the Metrodome. Maybe his smaller teammates Marion Barber III and Tellis Redmon should have been. Granted, Johnson had four catches for 73 yards and a touchdown, was a preseason All-American and is the school’s all-time leader in receptions with 176. But in Saturday’s win over MSU, Johnson took the backseat to 5-foot-11 Barber and 6-foot Redmon, who both had late fourth quarter touchdown runs to regain the lead and seal a much-needed conference victory. Barber had 158 yards on 15 carries and Redmon had 134 yards on 22 carries. Substituting both running backs made a difference, especially late in the game, Redmon said. “The mixing up of Marion and I was good because it was the small things that made the difference,” Redmon said.

Womens crew wins every event at Head of the Grand
The MSU women’s crew team was the star of its own show Sunday, winning every event in the Head of the Grand, its only home meet of the season. The team beat instate rivals Grand Valley State and Northern Michigan in the novice eight, the women’s pair, the women’s varsity eight and the women’s varsity four events on the Grand River in Lansing.

The MSU’s men and women’s cross country teams headed to Ypsilanti on Friday to compete in the Eastern Michigan Cross Country Classic. The women’s team took two of the top 10 places.

Minnesota falls 1-0 to Spartans
The MSU women’s soccer team only needed one chance Sunday. The Spartans (7-6-2, 4-4-1 Big Ten) recorded a 1-0 win against Minnesota (4-10, 3-7) on Sunday at Old College Field. The Spartans dominated the first half with 10 shots, but Minnesota found a way to thwart most of MSU’s chances. But the Gopher defense couldn’t stop a Spartan corner kick 29 minutes into the game. Sophomore forward Tiffany Laskowski kicked the ball in front of the net.

A dose of déjà vu nearly befell Munn Ice Arena on Saturday night, as a Zamboni mishap delayed the start of the second period by about 15 minutes. During the first intermission, a Munn employee sitting on the Zamboni attempted to throw a giveaway T-shirt into the crowd, but his toss failed to clear the glass in the northeast corner of the rink.

Two years ago, sophomore midfielder Jeff Krass scored 23 goals for Brighton High School. Now he is being recognized for only scoring a third of that. Dortch getting comfortable at cornerback
When sophomore tailback Tyrell Dortch played cornerback last week against Iowa, it wasn’t just an isolated experiment. After recording five tackles in 39 plays at cornerback, head coach Bobby Williams said Dortch will start there at Minnesota on Saturday. “I thought Tyrell Dortch did some very good things at that corner position,” Williams said.
