The last time the MSU volleyball team played at Breslin Center was Nov. 4, 1995. That was four days before Tom Izzo coached his first game at MSU and the same weekend the MSU football team beat Michigan 28-25 at Spartan Stadium. Starting this season, the CCHA will be the only college hockey league to implement a shootout to resolve ties for conference games.

For two straight weeks, the MSU defense laid low and pressured the quarterback solely with a four-man rush, dropping linebackers and the secondary back into coverage. The Notre Dame offensive line and quarterback Jimmy Clausen learned Saturday what can happen when the Spartans’ linebackers and cornerbacks are let loose at the line of scrimmage.

Smith Center celebrates 10th anniversary
For former MSU men’s basketball player Steve Smith, 10 years has flown by since the opening of the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center in 1998. In 1997, Smith donated $2.5 million for the construction of a facility that would serve as both an academic center and gathering space for student-athletes — the largest single donation ever made by a professional athlete to an alma mater.

Spartans come back to win Fossum
The No. 24 MSU women’s golf team came back from five strokes down Sunday to upset No. 19 Kent State and win the Mary Fossum Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Spartans — who shot 25 over par and trailed Kent State, 20 over par, and Notre Dame, 24 over par, after 36 holes — won by the slimmest of margins, requiring two tiebreakers to prevail.

MSU’s dominance over Notre Dame in the trenches played an integral role in the Spartans’ 23-7 victory over the Fighting Irish on Saturday in which MSU’s linemen imposed their will on the Irish.

Stanley Cup visits Spartan Stadium to benefit charity
Despite Saturday’s highly anticipated MSU vs. Notre Dame football game, hockey fans had a reason to get excited and leave the tailgate early. The Stanley Cup was outside Spartan Stadium to support the MSU hockey team’s effort to raise money for children’s cancer.

Ringer's big game spurs MSU to victory
After the MSU football team defeated Notre Dame 23-7 on Saturday, the trailer behind the north endzone of Spartan Stadium where postgame interviews are held started filling up. One by one, members of MSU’s offensive line took the stage before senior running back Javon Ringer finally entered and stood at the podium. “Like I said before, I can do nothing without these guys standing next to me,” said Ringer, who rushed for 201 yards and two touchdowns on 39 carries. “It was a great team win and we were very, very dominant up front on both sides of the ball.”
