Investigation ongoing in Carmack case

A spokesperson from the MSU athletics department said they are deferring all calls about the alleged involvement of the MSU hockey team in the assault of Brandon Carmack to the East Lansing Police Department and MSU University Relations.

University officials reported a 25-year-old female employee embezzled eight checks worth $800 and $200 in cash from a business in the Natural Resources department. The witness, a 31-year-old employee, said the suspect embezzled money between December 2010 and July 16, when the suspect was fired. The business is conducting an internal audit to ensure more money has not been taken.

23-year-old student was struck on his bicycle at approximately 6:40 p.m. today near the Human Ecology Building and Olin Health Center on Grand River Avenue. East Lansing police officer Dan DeKorte said the victim was heading west on Grand River Avenue on his bicycle, and a young woman in a navy Chevy Trailblazer, believing the path to be clear, pulled out of the Ramp 6 exit on Grand River Avenue and hit him as he passed on the sidewalk. DeKorte said the man on the bike tried to avoid the car, but they ended up colliding. Police said the victim suffered leg injuries from the incident. “He might have broken (his leg),” DeKorte said.

East Lansing Fire Department and MSU police responded to a chemical fire between 4:11 and 4:56 p.m. on June 21 in the Chemistry Building on Shaw Lane. A 55-year-old employee was attempting to dispose of chemical waste under a fume hood and the waste began to smoke, then caught fire. The employee called a 28-year-old male for help and they pulled the fire alarm to evacuate the building. Firefighters distinguished the remaining flames and allowed individuals to re-enter the building. There was no damage to the building. Phone Missing An 18-year-old male student reported his phone missing during Academic Orientation Program between 10-10:30 p.m.

Police Brief 06/26/11

A 21-year-old male student was arrested on June 19 for intentionally driving through the gate at Lot 62 near IM Sports-West, breaking the arm of the gate valued at $100. The incident was reported by a 20-year-old student employee and occurred between 6:10 and 10:30 p.m. According to the report, the suspect drove his tan four-door 1999 Toyota through the gate because he did not have money to pay the fee to park in the lot.

Police Brief 06/25/12

After the launch of the national Click It or Ticket campaign in May, about 8,050 seat belt and child seat violation tickets were issued in Michigan, according to release from Michigan State Police Office of Highway Safety Planning. The campaign, which ran May 21 through June 3, collected about 1,000 fewer citations than last year’s effort. Reports from 157 police agencies in 26 Michigan counties show 14,761 vehicles were stopped during the two-week period.

Alleged campus thief arrested Tuesday

Police released new information about the arrest of alleged thief, 43-year-old James Lackey, who was caught by a Michigan State police fugitive team on Tuesday in Lansing, according to MSU police officer Chris Rozman. Rozman said Lackey had been stealing items on campus for years, including involvement in a 2003 incident in which he physically assaulted a police officer who was investigating a number of thefts from buildings on campus.

Frank Ambrose, one of the environmental activists convicted for participation in the Agriculture Hall arson New Year’s Eve in 1999, had his sentence reduced by about three years on April 9 in the U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids, a court spokeswoman said.
