Street safety priority with more bikers, pedestrians

Between 2004 and 2012, there were 161 car and bicycle accidents causing injuries in East Lansing, according to crash data from the Office of Highway Safety Planning. There were five fatal accidents and 91 other accidents causing injury between pedestrians and cars. Something needs to be done to make the roads safer for everyone, especially if walking and biking continue to grow in popularity.

This past summer, six of my friends from high school and I loaded into a minivan and headed to a county park to watch a fireworks show. Talking and singing at the top of our lungs, we were goofing around the whole way there. We had just entered a roundabout when the car in front of us slammed on its brakes. By the time my friend hit her brakes, it was too late.

Whether or not marriage equality has popular support does not make it any less of a right. It was not the constituents’ place to make a blanket judgment in part implying same-sex couples are inherently worse parents, and it is irresponsible for the state to defend that decision.
