Fieger to make decision on gubernatorial candidacy

Detroit attorney Geoffrey Fieger could become the Democratic front-runner in the gubernatorial race if he decides to pursue candidacy. Fieger said Monday he would make a decision about his candidacy by the end of the week and is preferred over the other Democratic candidates, according to a poll of 400 Michigan residents.

Prof appointed institute leader

Rick Foster, a W.K. Kellogg professor in food, society and sustainability at MSU, has been selected to direct the new Institute for Greening Michigan: Leveraging Natural and Human Assets for Prosperity.

MSU to host free outdoor concert

A free concert will be performed by Michigan rock band Doop and the Inside Outlaws at 5 p.m. Friday at the rock on Farm Lane. The event is presented by MSU’s University Activities Board and Senior Class Council.

The East Lansing Public Library and the East Lansing Hannah Community Center have teamed up to provide study hotspots for MSU students looking for a quiet study space during finals.

MSU racing team ready to reveal car

MSU’s Formula One Racing Team will unveil at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Engineering Building a race car they’ve spent the last year building from the ground up. About 20 MSU students from various majors are on the team.

ASMSU looking ahead to summer, fall semesters

As the semester ends, ASMSU’s Academic and Student assemblies already are planning projects for the summer and fall semesters. Academic Assembly held its last official meeting Tuesday night and Student Assembly will finish Thursday.

NPHC Week acknowledges greeks, religion

On Monday, a panel discussion about the connection between the greek community and religion kicked off the National Pan-Hellenic Council’s Spring NPHC Week — an annual event meant to end the semester and bring attention to the organization. The National Pan-Hellenic Council, or NPHC, is an umbrella organization that includes nine traditionally black fraternities and sororities.

MSU cheer club attends nationals

The MSU All-Girl competitive cheer club team finished first in the Big Ten and seventh in the nation at the 2010 Nationals competition in Daytona Beach, Fla. The program expanded this season and members attended various competitions nationwide.

Beloved primate dies at local zoo

A 28-year-old female mandrill — likened to Rafiki in Disney’s “The Lion King” — named Gladys died Wednesday evening at Lansing’s Potter Park Zoo, 1301 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Gladys first arrived at the zoo in 1989 after she was born in Brownsville, Texas, in 1982.

Students renovate area school

When the Reo Elementary School Rockets come into class Monday, they’ll be writing about something new they see, something “exceptional” — it’s the word of the week. And considering the extent of renovations made by the MSU branch of the Student Michigan Education Association, or SMEA, on Saturday, there will be a wide variety of things from which to choose.

Sparty party hit by rain

Nearly 2,000 people crossed the threshold of Sparty’s Spring Party 2010 on Saturday at Demonstration Field to participate in giveaways and carnival-like fare. The annual event — now in its ninth year — was sponsored by MSU’s University Activities Board, or UAB, Student Alumni Foundation, or SAF, and ASMSU.

The candidate pool for the MSU Board of Trustees continues to grow after an MSU alumnus and local business owner announced his intention to seek one of two spots open during this year’s midterm elections.

Chai Party becomes tradition

What has become an annunal event known as the Chai Party has become an unexpected tradition since it first began in 2006 by several roommates — all MSU students — who wanted to know if it was possible to create a party atmosphere without the drinking. More than 125 people attended this year’s event hosted throughout Friday night.
