Drug educators and law enforcement officials say there is a window of opportunity for GHB, or gamma hydroxybutyrate, to become more available.The drug feared by women and coveted by clubgoers was approved as Xyrem on Wednesday by the Food and Drug Administration to treat narcolepsy.

Boys & Girls Club gets new director

The Boys & Girls Club of Lansing, 4315 Pleasant Grove Road, announced Mike Dean as the new director of the Teen Center on July 11. Formerly the unit director of the Grand River Elementary satellite club, Dean will oversee the operations of the Teen Center and provide programs for members ages 13 to 17. Dean received his bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Wright State University in 1979.

Land use to be discussed at meeting

East Lansing city officials are inviting residents to voice their opinions on the final stages of the Northern Tier Land Use Plan at a public hearing Wednesday. The forum will give residents a chance to voice their opinions of how the land should be developed.

Online programs work to boost security

Security officials around the world could be better prepared for protecting the globe after participating in MSU’s new institute.The Global Community Security Institute is an online program to educate and certify security officials and public servants to improve security and safety.The programs, stemming from some already existing and others newly formed, can be custom designed for individual organizations or communities.Community officials from across the nation have shown interest in participating in some kind of program like the global institute, said Ed McGarrell, director of the School of Criminal Justice.“Obviously we want to first meet the needs of Michigan, but we’re thinking nationally as well,” he said.The program is funded entirely by federal dollars from the homeland security initiative, he said.“Every community within the state and country since Sept.

Plan in place to clean up river

MSU researchers studying the path of pollutants into the Red Cedar River could help neighboring upstream communities with efforts to clean up Michigan streams, lakes and rivers.The research is part of an ongoing $1.4 million project called MSU-WATER, or Watershed Action Through Education and Research.

Driver runs car into tree, E.L. home

A loud crash sent residents of Stoddard and Frye streets running into the road just after midnight Tuesday.The driver of a silver Ford Explorer had failed to stop at the intersection shortly before plowing over the lawn, bouncing off a tree and coming to rest under the living-room window of a duplex at 1224 Frye St.No serious injuries resulted from the accident, though the driver sustained a broken nose.

Granholm discusses education concerns

Lansing - Attorney General Jennifer Granholm met with area education and community leaders Tuesday to learn the “hot button” educational issues in her quest for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.Granholm, flanked by Lansing Mayor David Hollister and Lansing Community College President Paula Cunningham, moderated a roundtable discussion at LCC’s Herrmann Conference Center.Early education and promoting responsible parenting are Granholm’s main concerns.“Preparation for a child’s learning and for life is critical to success,” she said.

Animal lab officials seek more funds

The new Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory scheduled to open this fall could have the capabilities to stop the spread of diseases affecting animals, but the facility is $3 million short of funding.In hopes of receiving the difference, the Michigan Farm Bureau organized a walking tour of the existing Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory for government representatives and legislative aides Thursday.
