Exhibit honors Jewish history at 'U' museum

Frances Peshkin remembers when her family was forced out of their small village in Germany by the Nazis and placed in a Jewish house.She remembers when her cousin saved $1,000 so she and her mother could immigrate to America.She also remembers how hard it was for her mother to find a job in Illinois and support a 6-year-old daughter.Now, Peshkin can share her memories with other people who remember what it was like to be Jewish and alive during World War II.The MSU Museum opened a combined exhibit Sunday called "Varian Fry - Assignment Rescue, 1940-1941" on loan from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, and "Uneasy Years: Michigan Jewry During Depression and War." It will be on display until June 2003 and features photos, newspapers and other documents about writer Varian Fry and Jewish life in Michigan.Older members of the group reminisced about their childhood through the exhibit."The America we came to in Illinois is not that different from the one they came to in Michigan," Peshkin said.

Staples sets new selling trend

In a move that environmental awareness groups hail as victory, office supply chain Staples Inc. announced plans last week to move toward selling environmentally friendly paper products. Staples announced new guidelines in which the company will attempt to average 30 percent post-consumer recycled content in all paper products, phase out purchases of paper products from endangered forests and create an environmental affairs division to report on the new guidelines' results.

Transfer students are less involved at new schools

Transfer students are not as involved in schoolwork and college activities than other students, according to recent results from the National Survey of Student Engagement. Kyle Bailey, a mechanical engineering sophomore, said transferring was easier than he thought, but said he did have some trouble adjusting. "The transition was pretty easy," the transfer student from Howard University said.

Although Mike Cox woke up Nov. 6 as Michigan's next attorney general, his opponent says it just might have been a dream. Cox, a Republican who's the deputy chief of the homicide unit of the Office of Prosecuting Attorney in Wayne County, unofficially has 1,497,434 votes compared to Sen.

Eco, ASMSU discuss tax for 'green energy'

An MSU environmental group hopes to set new trends for the university by exploring the possibility of renewable energy - through a proposed student tax.Eco met with ASMSU's Student Assembly on Thursday night to gain support for a preliminary plan to implement a $5 per semester tax to fund either wind turbines or a solar panel system, which are both environmentally friendly sources of energy.ASMSU is MSU's undergraduate student government."Renewables are not only smarter, they're cheaper," said Mitch Petz, a finance junior and Eco member.

Museum to open new Jewish exhibit

The MSU Museum's Heritage Gallery will open a new exhibit at 2 p.m. Sunday. The exhibit will host the exhibits "Varian Fry - Assignment: Rescue, 1940-1941" and "Uneasy Years: Michigan Jewry During The Depression and War." Fry's work deals with relief efforts to help Jewish refugees who were threatened by the Nazis in 1940. "Uneasy Years" looks at efforts of Jewish people living in Michigan to fight anti-Semitism and contribute to the American war effort.

Year-end housing initiative launched

A year-end fund-raising campaign to strengthen the initiative of providing quality and affordable housing was launched by the Greater Lansing Housing Coalition today in Lansing. The housing coalition, a nonprofit housing developer, will top off its campaign with a free holiday open house at two of its restored Lansing historic homes from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

House increases funds for merit scholarships despite rising deficit

In the midst of budget woes, things began to look up for college students this week when the House passed a supplemental bill that approved spending an additional $9 million on merit award scholarships.The measure, approved 101-3 by the House Wednesday, is a response to what state officials say was an overwhelming number of Michigan Merit Award recipients.
