Hall of Fame accepting nominations

The Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame now is accepting nominations for inductees. Nominees are required to have established themselves or to have roots in Michigan. Steve Lacy, chairman of the Hall of Fame committee, said nominees should be outstanding contributors to their communities as well as educators who have served as models to aspiring journalists. “(These are) people who have made contributions that have exceeded what the average person has done as a journalist,” said Lacy, who is director of the School of Journalism. Honorees will be inducted at a banquet April 20at the Kellogg Center. “It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized by peers in the field,” University Ombudsman Stan Soffin said, who was inducted in 1999. Soffin has worked as a high school journalism and English teacher.

Posthumus begins campaign attack ads

Trailing by 13 points in the latest EPIC/MRA poll, Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus has gone on the offensive in his bid to become the state’s next governor.In the campaign’s first political advertisement since his victory in the August primary election, Posthumus attacks Attorney General Jennifer Granholm’s stance on a proposal passed in 1994 that increased state sales taxes while reducing property taxes.

E.L. to promote alcohol awareness

Football crowds and greek pledges will keep East Lansing buzzing next month, and city officials are hopeful an alcohol and drug awareness campaign will curb drinking and drug abuse in the MSU party scene.The East Lansing City Council voted last week to observe September as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.

Bikers head to Mackinaw for long weekend

Stanley Bieker grinned as he pulled on his striped helmet and adjusted the duct tape on the handlebars of his pale yellow bike.“This will be my 32nd year doing this,” the 63-year-old Greenville resident said Wednesday morning as he prepared his bike for the “Dick Allen Lansing to Mackinaw” tour.

U to vote on greek input

The MSU student body will decide in the spring whether the Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils will have a vote on the ASMSU Academic Assembly.The Academic Assembly voted 10-2 Tuesday night to hold a referendum to allow the greek councils a vote on Academic Assembly.

Grant hopes to improve K-8 science learning

MSU’s College of Education was awarded a five-year, $2.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation that will allow university educators to collaborate with K-8 teachers from Lansing Public Schools to improve science learning.

Study: Most students lack renters insurance

Despite warnings and horror stories about protecting rented homes and apartments, a study released this week says more than 80 percent of college students living off campus don’t have proper insurance to protect their belongings. Many students do not realize insurance plans can change when they leave for college, said Bob Pierce, CEO of the Michigan Association of Insurance Agents, which released the survey conducted by Insurance Agents & Brokers of America. He said most insurance policies will let a college student be listed as a dependent only if he or she is a full-time student, leaving part-time students to fend for themselves. “When the student moves away to go to school, the parents should contact their insurance agent to determine how much coverage the student will have,” Pierce said.

As students wait in line to purchase books this week, they are debating the convenience of buying books online versus the traditional way of taking them off the shelf. For dietetics senior Karina Forberger, buying online was more about convenience than prices.

Students cant find new building

One of the newest buildings on campus would be a sight to see for students and faculty - if it were easier to find.Since it was opened in April, the Biomedical and Physical Sciences Building features many amenities, such as an atrium, state-of-the-art equipment and new furniture - if only students could find it easier.“The map I had, it wasn’t on there,” said engineering sophomore Brittney Mcgraw.

U acquire courses, knowledge about 9-11

MSU faculty members want students interested in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to know 18 courses related to the attacks await them this school year.From freshman seminars to a course in plant pathology, MSU administrators have made an effort to make opportunities available to learning more about what occurred last year.“One of the goals of undergraduate education is to make (students) knowledgeable of the world around them,” Provost Lou Anna Simon said.

Survey shows increase in visits to state government Web sites

Michigan Web surfers are logging more visits to state Web sites, according to an MSU survey released this week.The report said about 59 percent of those Internet users sampled in a statewide survey connected to state-operated Web sites to obtain information on topics such as elections, candidate biographies and community events in the past year.

Gas demand, cost high

Anticipating a rise in gas prices for Labor Day weekend, East Lansing motorists are fueling up before they hit the road. An estimated 1.3 million Michigan motorists will be traveling during the long weekend, according to a survey by AAA Michigan, meaning more time will be spent at the pumps.
