Students compete in Junkyard Wars challenge
As soon as mechanical engineering senior Adam Sajdak finished addressing about 40 people who had assembled at the IM Sports-West tennis courts on Friday afternoon, the engineers launched into action with gusto, and this year’s Junkyard Wars competition officially began. Each of the seven competing teams was given a 4-by-4 sheet of plywood and an 8-foot length of 2-by-4 to start, along with a drill, four wheels, as many screws or nails as needed and a shared circular saw. The objective was to build a cart to hold two 70-pound sandbags in about an hour and a half. The cart then was pushed through a slalom course in a relay race, and a head-to-head tournament decided the winner.

MSU Underwater Hockey Team hosts tournament Sunday
With fins flapping and water splashing, underwater hockey players from 10 different colleges and cities competed for fun and glory this weekend in MSU’s 12th annual Tournament of Love, held at IM Sports-West. In underwater hockey, players drop a 3-pound puck to the bottom of a pool and use small sticks to push the puck into the opposing team’s goal.

Gradhacker blog gains popularity
A blog created last year by MSU graduate students about the ups and downs of graduate student life recently has partnered with news publication Inside Higher Education. The blog, GradHacker.org, officially began publishing on the Inside Higher Education website in December 2011 and now averages between 3,000-4,000 unique hits per day, said graduate student and GradHacker co-editor Katy Meyers.
