Ike pours into Mich.

Hurricane Ike wreaked havoc along the Gulf Coast last week, but the storm also can be blamed for a deluge of inconveniences that reached the Lansing area. The price of gas skyrocketed over the weekend amid rumors of price gouging, and rain caused many students not willing to brave the elements to miss the MSU football game. Local businesses also reported rained-out sales, and the level of the Red Cedar River climbed to flood potential.

1999 arson suspect to plead guilty

Another link in a nine-year-old MSU arson case will close today. Marie Jeanette Mason, one of four people charged with setting the 1999 New Year’s Eve fire in Agriculture Hall, will plead guilty to involvement in the arson.

Students surprise kids with school supplies

School supplies may not excite college students, but there was no greater thrill for the children at Shabazz Public School Academy. Freshman business students from MSU donated school supplies to the academy Friday in boxes the MSU students created.

Animal science grad students, staff show research at forum

Animal science graduate students and researchers had their chance to shine and present their work Friday. The third annual Animal Science Graduate Student Research Forum gave students and staff the opportunity to present research and interact with each other and faculty, said Lindsey De Vries, a graduate student in animal science and one of the organizers.

The second annual MI Response to Hate conference spread awareness of the growing problem of hate and bias-motivated crimes in Michigan on Friday. The conference was hosted by the Michigan Alliance Against Hate Crimes and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights at Kellogg Center.

Granholm, other leaders tout bioenergy study at MSU

The Plant and Soil Sciences Building played host to what might have been confused for an East Lansing red carpet event Friday, as Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Rep. Mark Meadows, D-East Lansing, and MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon were on hand to promote bioenergy research.

Board of Trustees to meet today

Plans to replace Morrill Hall and expand MSU’s plant science program are among the discussion topics at today’s MSU Board of Trustees meeting. Also on the board’s agenda is a proposal to increase parking space in Lot 89. The meeting, held at 9:30 a.m., is the board’s first of the fall semester.
