Campuses in Denver closed while DNC is under way this week

Downtown Denver is busier than ever this week as Democratic National Convention activities take over the city, but colleges and universities in the downtown area look like ghost towns. The Auraria Higher Education Center, a campus for three higher education institutions in Denver, has completely shut down operations in anticipation of traffic and security issues caused by the convention.

Upgrades modernize Holden Hall for residents' use

When students enter Holden Hall this year, they’ll notice a bit of construction going on as well as a few changes in the design of the floor. Bright colors adorn the walls and coordinating spots line the floors after the first floor of the South Complex residence hall underwent noticeable renovations this summer.

For Garrett O’Sullivan, hanging out with 200 friends in lime Jell-O and soap suds was the perfect way to celebrate the start of a new school year. “I think that (Welcome Week) is slowly getting more intense,” said the physiology senior, who hosted a party Thursday at his house on Division Street. “There’s a certain amount of competition between parties, and people want to top it.”

But couches in trees and kitchen furniture tossed in yards alludes to something bigger: Hundreds of dollars in violations and a bad image for East Lansing.

Business booms with Welcome Week

In the midst of a struggling economy, Welcome Week provided a welcome boost in sales for several new businesses along East Grand River Avenue. Four businesses that opened since the close of spring classes saw a surge in clientele as MSU students settled in before the first week of classes, business owners said.
