Melvin “Butch” Hollowell may have many things on his mind since announcing his candidacy for secretary of state, but the Democratic attorney can rest easy when it comes to choosing a necktie. “My daughter picks out my ties every morning - she takes out a tie, lays it neatly on the bed and she says, ‘this is what you’re going to do today,’” Hollowell said laughing.

Conference to provide culture, entertainment

The Asian Pacific American Student Organization kicks off its annual fall conference today with the theme “APASObilities.” “Our theme comes from the fact that anything is possible,” said APASO secretary Stephanie Moy, an elementary education sophomore. Moy said the purpose of the conference is to spread Asian-American culture to the MSU community and increase awareness. “We want to help the whole campus, not just Asian Americans,” she said.

DCL rules against political bill

A debate on a bill about Palestinian rights Tuesday ended before the proposal’s merits could be discussed at a Student Bar Association meeting at the MSU-Detroit College of Law Building.The association decided it was not in its position to take a side on political issues because it represent the entire student body as the majority of the board voted against the bill.

Police increase patrols for Halloween driving, parties

Halloween means parties, costumes, candy - and for some, alcohol. But before trick-or-treaters take to the roads, county law enforcement officials are warning drivers they’ll be out in full force to crack down on impaired driving this weekend. Agencies within Ingham County, including East Lansing, plan to increase police presence starting Friday.

Month raises awareness for learning disabilities

For the second-straight year, Gov. John Engler has proclaimed October to be Learning Disabilities Awareness Month in Michigan to raise social cognizance of this “hidden disability.”Learning disabilities affect a person’s ability to interpret what is seen or heard and then link that information with other parts of the brain.

Student group to host Meet the Candidates

Seven candidates running for office will stop on campus Wednesday night for a “Meet the Candidates” night. The event, organized by the MSU Student Voters’ Coalition, will feature candidates for 69th District state representative, 23rd District state senator and secretary of state.

Board of Trustees, students to debate

Four of the candidates for the MSU Board of Trustee will debate at 6 p.m. Wednesday in 145 Communication Arts and Sciences Building. Bill Ballenger, editor and publisher of Inside Michigan Politics, will serve as the moderator. The 90-minute debate, sponsored by the Council of Graduate Students and The State News, will include incumbents Colleen McNamara, a Democrat, and Don Nugent, a Republican, as well as State Sen.

U employee gets obscene call

An MSU employee received an obscene phone call from an unknown man stating he was coming after her last week.Police say a 34-year-old woman received four obscene phone calls in her Administration Building office between 8 a.m.
