Entomology professor discusses E.L.'s mosquito population

As it rains more in the summer, mosquitos become a serious problem for the residents here in East Lansing.  Michael Kaufman, associate professor in the department of entomology, said, "There are large number, what we called, 'summer flood mosquitos'. It definitely relates to the rain. "  Except the amount of rains happened during the summer, the warm temperature also helped the mosquitos' growing.

Izzo speaks on athlete's misconduct

A day after news broke of the suspension of MSU junior guard Eron Harris due to a July 1 drunk driving arrest, the MSU basketball program received more bad news Wednesday, as news surfaced of junior guard Alvin Ellis’ May 2 charge of misdemeanor count of underage purchase, consumption or possession of alcohol surfaced. The charges were eventually dismissed and dropped to a public littering charge of $615, according to online records at 54B District Court in East Lansing. In addition to this, online records also indicate that a month later on June 19, Ellis was once again hit with a charge of underage purchase, consumption or possession of alcohol. "Being a student-athlete at Michigan State University is a privilege.

La Bodega to close Friday

After seven years of business La Bodega, a clothing and retail store located at 619 E. Grand River Ave., will close its doors for the last time at 6 p.m. Friday, store owner Leif Elias said.

CBS ranks MSU the 6th best in college sports

MSU is ranked No. 6 in the recent CBS Best in College Sports rankings. MSU is one of four Big Ten schools in the top 10. According to the website The National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) has been ranking athletic programs for years but weighs every sport equally, meaning a football national title is worth the same number of points (100) as a women's water polo title.

Andrew Singler Memorial Cup supports scholarship fund

More than two years after MSU student Andrew Singler was stabbed to death at his apartment by Okemos resident Connor McCowan, for which McCowan was sentenced to 20 to 60 years, the family plans to remember Singler’s life at the second annual Andrew Singler Memorial Cup in Ann Arbor.

Campus abuzz in the summer with youth outreach programs

MSU’s campus is packed throughout the academic year with more than 40,000 students, but during the summer MSU is host to a younger generation of possible Spartans. This summer alone more than 200 groups and 50,000 people will participate in programs ranging from fashion design to video game design, MSU spokesperson Jason Cody said via email. With thousands of children participating in MSU’s camps, the campus can still seem just as crowded as students see it during the academic year.
