Offense improved season, now ready for playoffs

Three months ago, Oldsmobile Park was not a very fun place to be. The Lansing Lugnuts were horrible - especially at home - and the spirits of sparse crowds that showed up were usually dampened by inclement weather, bad baseball or both. Fast forward to Tuesday night.

Bill Knapps decides to downsize company

Bill Knapp’s Restaurants might be closing a location back home. Eleven Bill Knapp’s restaurants in Michigan and five in Ohio have closed because of a lack of customers. “Like any other restaurant, they looked at each location to see what the market is,” said Nick Thole, a spokesman for Bill Knapp’s Restaurants. Thole said in the majority of the cases, the company felt it would be good to pull back and let business matriculate to the others. Local Bill Knapp’s locations in Lansing, Okemos and Delta Township, however, are still safe, he said. “Right now I would say those restaurants are very strong for the company,” he said. Whether other locations will also close is still unknown. “I don’t know the future plans for the company, it is just an ongoing thing and they make the determinations on whether this is the right move,” Thole said.

Ghost of Mars another cheesy horror flick

Finally, a movie for those people who can’t wait until the weekend so they can watch all the late-night, awful horror movies with titles like “Bikini Camp III: The Reckoning.” Unless you are a fan of really bad horror movies, stay as far away as possible from writer/director John Carpenter’s latest, “Ghosts of Mars.” This movie stinks so bad, you’ll think the only other person in the theater filled their pants - and not from being frightened. This movie is so degrading to watch, as an audience member you almost want to track down Carpenter and slap him back into the 1980s, the home of bad horror flicks. It’s not that it’s full of bad actors - to the contrary, there are a number of people in this bomb whose friends should consider an intervention. First is Ice Cube, who has more than proven his acting abilities in movies like “Three Kings.” He plays James Williams, who was convicted of murder.

Recruits often kept despite problems

I agree with you in your disgust of the Eric Knott situation (“Cold reception,” SN 8/15). But before you lavish the University of Michigan with “high praise for their discretion and selectivity in choosing their players” consider the case of Kelly Baraka.

VOLLEYBALL

Sophomore status doesnt stop Colson as leader

On every team, every player has some responsibility. Some have more than others. In volleyball, the setter plays that lead roll. Spartan volleyball Coach Chuck Erbe describes the setter position as similar to other sports’ positions often mentioned in the same breath as leadership. “It’s like the quarterback in football and the point guard in basketball,” Erbe said.

No mistake

Something must have touched the heartstrings of MSU’s parking enforcers during Welcome Weekend.

R-rated trailer removed from Internet site

Culver City, Calif. - Sony Pictures Entertainment has pulled an R-rated trailer for the upcoming comedy “Not Another Teen Movie” from an Internet site. The Motion Picture Association of America, which rates films and advertisements, complained to the studio last week that R-rated trailers should not be shown on the Internet, where underage children can view them. MPAA President Jack Valenti said the ad, which featured profanity and partial nudity, was withdrawn immediately by Sony from the Redbandtrailer.com preview site. The site could not be accessed at all last Friday. The trailer was only approved for theaters showing R-rated movies, Valenti added. Sony officials told the Los Angeles Times the company wasn’t aware of the MPAA regulations.
