Freshman cagers prepare for spotlight

In college basketball, most freshmen have the luxury of playing in a backup role their first season - allowing them more time to study a coach’s system.But for MSU’s freshman class - 6-foot-4 shooting guard Kelvin Torbert, 6-foot-6 swingman Alan Anderson and 6-foot-3 combo-guard Chris Hill - there are big shoes to fill with swingman Jason Richardson’s and forward Zach Randolph’s early departures to the NBA.“(We) don’t have a lot of time,” said Hill, of Indianapolis’ Lawrence North High.

Miller receives Big Ten award

MSU junior goaltender Ryan Miller continued his reign as college hockey’s poster boy by earning Big Ten Male Athlete of the Year distinction June 25.Miller is the first male Spartan to win the award in its 20-year existence.

Telecommunication class creates Virtual Commerce Mall on Internet

While new technology is making a world of virtual businesses available on the Internet, some MSU students have been learning more about it through a simulation of their own.Charles Steinfield’s Telecommunication 891, Advanced Electronic Commerce, has constructed the Virtual Commerce Mall - a Web site with nine virtual stores created by students.Steinfield, a professor of telecommunication, said it’s important students understand how business and technology combine.“Part of the problem that we’ve had with all the dot com failures is a whole lot of people started creating Web businesses without really knowing enough about what makes a good business,” he said.

U signs contract to broadcast games

MSU football and basketball games should be easier to tune into this year, now that MSU has signed a four-year contract with CBS Radio/Infinity Broadcasting in Detroit.Starting this season, all MSU football games will be broadcast on WXYT radio, (Team 1270-AM) and all MSU basketball games will be broadcast on WWJ radio (950-AM).WXYT will also host weekly call-in shows with football head coach Bobby Williams and men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo.

Computers required for U

Nearly 6,000 freshmen will move onto campus this fall, ready to wave goodbye to mom and dad, say hello to their new roommate and plug in their Ethernet-ready computers.They don’t have a choice.MSU’s computer requirement begins this fall, insisting all students entering with freshman status bring along a computer prepped for Internet access.A 1998 proposal by Provost Lou Anna Simon would have required freshmen to enter with an Internet-capable laptop computer.

Womens soccer talented, expected to return strong

A combination of experienced returning players and incoming freshmen will be the foundation of the 2001 women’s soccer team. “We’ve got a young team, but it’s as talented as any team in the 16 seasons of (varsity) soccer,” head coach Tom Saxton said. Last season, the Spartans finished fifth in the Big Ten with an overall record of 12-6-2, but they’ll be without graduated captains Ann Czieszkowski, Gina Dawson and Sara Kloosterman this year.

Twin setting: about 85 sets at U

As their teammates screamed in joy for them, Jay Kuhlman and his twin brother, education senior Chris Kuhlman, celebrated the Spartan men’s water polo team’s national championship with a hug. Jay said he’ll never forget earning the championship over Washington alongside his brother. “It’s amazing that we were both there to experience it and that we were able to share the same feelings of accomplishment,” Jay said. But now, with Jay finished with school and working two hours away from Lansing, Greg is living the single life. “It’s a change.
