Weekend sporting slate shredded as NFL, major leagues take days off

After announcing Wednesday the home game against Missouri was on, MSU and Missouri officials decided to cancel the game Thursday, because of unusual travel logistics following the terrorist attack Tuesday.

Student film crew to hold auditions for movie today

For anyone who has stayed up late watching the likes of “Halloween,” “Evil Dead” or “Friday the 13th,” this weekend you may just get your chance to be in a horror movie yourself.A film crew is holding open auditions this weekend to fill the cast of their new flick “Terror at Baxter U.,” and it will be made entirely by local filmmakers and shot in the area.“I just had an idea,” said English Professor Bill Vincent, who wrote the script.

Student teachers cope in classroom

Katie Drury had to smile and pretend a national disaster didn’t happen while mentoring in a third-grade classroom Tuesday. “It was difficult to put on the happy face and represent the teacher model,” said Drury, a teaching intern at Whitehills Elementary School, 621 Pebblebrook Lane. Drury is one of about 550 graduates of MSU’s College of Education who have been coping with Tuesday’s terrorist attacks on the United States while interning in classrooms across the state. “For many of the interns, this is challenging because it was the first time they were looked to as adults by the children and teens who were seeking answers and support,” said Trudy Sykes, coordinator for the secondary education program. Cary Grimm, an MSU graduate who interns at Novi Meadows school in Novi, said the teachers decided against sharing the news with students. “It didn’t really hit me until the kids left,” Grimm said.

Price gougers may pay heavy fines

State Rep. Mike Kowall wants the state to impose stricter penalties on those who price gouge in a time of tragedy.Kowall, a White Lake Republican and assistant majority whip, unveiled legislation Thursday that would modify Michigan’s Consumer Protection Act to make profiteering a felony crime punishable by five years in prison and a $20,000 fine.

Local rockers to perform in Ann Arbor this weekend

If you are one of the many Domestic Problems fans who missed its most recent show in East Lansing, you may have to take a road trip to catch the band this fall.The Grand Rapids sextet played at Rick’s American Cafe, 224 Abbott Road, in late August, before many students returned for the fall semester and doesn’t have any other shows in East Lansing planned for the coming months.But that doesn’t mean it won’t be nearby.

LCC students gather to unite following attacks

Lansing - About 300 Lansing Community College students and staff sang “We Are The World” today and reflected on those struggling for their lives after Tuesday’s terrorist attacks.The Time for Unity rally was held at Washington Square in Lansing on LCC’s campus.President Paula Cunningham addressed the crowd and college counselors were on hand to talk with community members and offer advice.“I came to unite with my fellow students,” LCC no-preference freshman Alicia Cosgray said.

Schools to make own decisions on sporting event cancellations

After Tuesday’s terrorist attacks, Big Ten officials told each school to make its own decision to cancel or hold athletic events this weekend - MSU officials said Wednesday that for the most part, the games are on. “Each school was allowed to take into consideration many factors,” university spokesman Terry Denbow said.

From wire reports Washington - Federal authorities have identified more than a dozen hijackers of Middle Eastern descent in Tuesday’s bombings and gathered evidence linking them to various terrorist networks, law enforcement officials said. The massive investigation stretched from the Canadian border, where officials suspect some of the hijackers entered the country, to Florida, where some of the participants are believed to have learned how to fly commercial jetliners before the attacks.

Even though head football coach Bobby Williams keeps his practices under wraps, everyone knows MSU must be focusing on special teams this week after Central Michigan blocked four punts in Saturday’s season opener.Special teams and linebackers coach Sal Sunseri took the blame for Saturday’s punt problems and said he should’ve lined up more athletic players in front of the punt team in practice.

Kwame Kilpatrick and Gil Hill are still in the running to become Detroit’s next mayor, but David Jaye won’t regain his old state Senate seat - at least for now. Results from Tuesday’s primary elections showed state House Minority Leader Kilpatrick, D-Detroit, and Detroit City Council President Gil Hill will compete in Detroit’s general mayoral race.
