Vegetarian column unfair, uninformed

I have two things that I’d like to comment on from Rishi Kundi’s column “Humans have earned spot at the top of food chain” (SN 8/23), which states his case against vegetarianism. First, I’d like to point out a discrepancy in his argument.

Mariah Carey deserves much needed break

Being a superstar in today’s society is tough. Look at any tabloid and you’ll see some pathetic-looking star with dark circles under her eyes and her belly hanging out of pants a couple sizes too small. Singer Mariah Carey knows that scenario all too well these days. Life can be stressful, and Carey is certainly feeling the heat recently after working on two different movie sets for “Glitter” and “Wise Girls,” as well as completing a soundtrack for “Glitter.” The effects of these projects caused her to recently check into a hospital \'because of mental and physical exhaustion. The consequence caused Carey’s release dates for the soundtrack and movie of “Glitter” to be set back to September 11 and 21, respectively, so she could re-energize. What’s more entertaining than seeing stars at their worst?

Police say oops to illegal parking

Kelly Downey racked up $53 in parking ticket charges while moving in this Welcome Week.Oops.But MSU’s Department of Police and Public Safety introduced a system to warn and inform parents and students about illegal parking without the cost: the “oops ticket.”“I’d rather have that on my car than a ticket,” said Downey, an advertising sophomore who ended the week with four parking tickets.

COMMENTARY

Perceived rank

The review’s 2002 edition of “The Best 331 Colleges” hit bookshelves recently with good news and bad news for MSU.

COMMENTARY

SN lacked facts in Knott case editorial

As aspiring journalists you should remember what is taught in class and stick to the facts when reporting (“Cold reception,” SN 8/15). Leave the speculation to the tabloids. The little known facts in the Eric Knott case point not to rape, but at worst to sex between an eighth grader and a high school junior.

COMMENTARY

Donate furniture to charities, not curb

A suggestion to students now changing residences, and something to consider for later in the year to others: When semesters change and students move out of their houses and apartments many put usable furniture they no longer need out to the curb with a big “free” sign attached.

FEATURES

Rat Race has weak plot, too predictable

Looking at the cast of the new film “Rat Race,” most would expect a great movie. After all, there are three Oscar winners (Whoopi Goldberg, Kathy Bates and Cuba Gooding Jr.) and several amazing comic talents including John Cleese of Monty Python, Rowan Atkinson of Mr. Bean fame and Jon Lovitz of Saturday Night Live, among others. Yet it manages to come off as nothing more than a mediocre movie. It has it’s funny moments, but if you’ve seen the previews then you’ve seen the bulk of them already, and you’ll spend the movie waiting for those funny bits.

U students benefit from teacher shortage

Although total unemployment nationwide is at its highest level since 1992, graduating education majors need not worry. Because of many factors, the nation’s teacher shortage isn’t getting much better, and two million teachers will be needed in the next ten years, said Margaret Trimer-Hartley, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Education Association. “This is very much a national issue,” Trimer-Hartley said.

SPORTS

Call me a redneck, but its true; I like NASCAR

Drunk hillbillies with mullets, motor homes and beat-up pickup trucks. They’re all stereotypical images of NASCAR fans who follow a sport condemned by a large portion of suburban America. But the sport’s following is fanatical, and there may be good reason why. You might as well just cue in Rosco, the General Lee, the Duke boys and Boss Hog, cause this is gonna get rural... It probably won’t settle well with many closed-minded traditionalists, convinced that a true sport has to be played with some type of ball. But it’s the largest spectator event in the nation, like it or not. And it deserves respect. Yeah, laugh if you want, call me a redneck, tell me I live in a trailer park, say I drink Pabst Blue Ribbon and listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Free Bird” all day.

Smell of money drove U to Knott

I am disgusted officials would recruit and give a scholarship to Eric Knott. They obviously have no sense except a sense of smell for money. While admittedly I don't know the whole context of the comment Coach Bobby Williams made, but to say it was a “university decision” is ridiculous.

Network upgrade to amplify speed of connections

An Internet upgrade for the university will be fast enough to have MSU researchers seeing stars.Merit Network, Inc., the company that provides Internet access to all 13 publicly funded universities in Michigan, announced an upgrade to an OC-48 link, which will create a 600 percent increase in MSU’s network connection speeds to the national network.

FOOTBALL

Media may say nay, but Spartans still believe

For the past two weeks, the MSU football team survived grueling two-a-day practices, complete with countless sprints in 90-degree heat and intense sessions in the weight room. All that hard work raised many players’ expectations for the season and the mediocre pre-season media predictions have left some of them miffed.
