Coach is good despite setbacks

The continued trashing of football head coach Bobby Williams by The State News and its readers is absurd (“Not worth it,” SN 1/7). Williams, was thrown into coaching his first game and first bowl game when he won the 2000 Florida Citrus Bowl.

Controversial play finds stage

“Breaking the Code,” has found a home in the Lansing School District.Earlier this month, the Catholic Diocese canceled the play’s run at Lansing Catholic Central High School due to disagreement with its gay themes and the Lansing Civic Players’ affiliation with the Triangle Foundation, a gay rights organization. “Breaking the Code,” will now open Jan.

Legislation fair for all health clinics

The state Legislature did a good thing in changing the funding priority for family planning agencies (“Planned Parenthood faces funding cutbacks,” SN 1/8). The goal for the bill mentioned in Tuesday‘s article is to divert funds from abortion-related organizations to those that promote family health.

Spartans fall in double overtime, 86-78

The Spartan women’s basketball team and the No. 5 Wisconsin Badgers lined up around the center circle for a jump ball with five minutes of overtime on the clock and the score tied at 63.Five minutes later, the two teams met in the same spot again, this time with the score knotted at 73.But in the second extra frame, the Badgers (13-1 overall, 5-1 Big Ten) played like the savvy, veteran team they are, outlasting the Spartans 86-78.With the loss, the Spartans (10-5, 0-4) stay winless in the Big Ten.Each team had its chances to finish each other off with the clock winding down.Regulation ended with junior forward Syreeta Bromfield’s 13-foot jumper rolling around the rim before falling off.

Duckett, with his announcement today that he’ll pass up his senior season to enter April’s NFL Draft, is bidding farewell to a college career full of highlights.Among the impressive stats compiled by the 6-1, 249-pound Kalamazoo native: Ranks sixth in MSU history in most rushing attempts with 621. Ranks fifth in career rushing yards with 3,379. Ranks ninth in most rushing touchdowns in a single season with 12. Ranks fourth in career rushing TDs with 29. Ranks eighth in most rushing attempts in one season with 263. Ranks fifth and seventh in most rushing yards in a season with 1,420 yards and 1,353 yards. My friends and I, for a while now, have called The State News the “Daily Oppressor.” We have so named it for various reasons, one being the large amount of grammatical errors.

Trust me, this is not a plea for T.J. Duckett to return next fall. Actually, I have no clue if the big guy will depart the banks of the Red Cedar for the NFL’s big bucks, but speculation has the 3,379-yard career-rusher fleeing MSU in a limo after his 4 p.m.
