Ted Staton invited a floor of Shaw Hall residents to his home for a Thanksgiving feast last year, and he’s willing to do it again.Staton, East Lansing city manager, is participating in the third year of the Adopt-A-Floor program, which matches East Lansing families with students on residence hall floors to encourage community unity.The Adopt-A-Floor kickoff orientation and picnic brought Staton and other program participants together for the first time Sunday.“Clearly associating names and lives with the student body as opposed to just a conglomerate of 43,000 people is a value,” Staton said.

Budget shortfalls could force closing of campus fire station

With budget problems looming, MSU’s fire station might soon be extinguished, a prospect that leaves some fire officials expressing concern for students’ safety. Don Carter, president of the local chapter of the International Association of Fire Fighters, said the campus could be in trouble without the station. “You’re going to have folks that could’ve been saved, but they couldn’t,” Carter said.

Trustees seek labor contract cap increase

In the early to mid 1980s, a candy bar cost at most 33 cents.Now, students are lucky to find one for 65 cents.On a larger scale, buildings cost a lot more to repair and construct nowadays.Some trustees have taken note of the inflation rate and it will seek an increase from the current $100,000 cap that can be spent on construction contracts and maintenance repairs without the board’s consent at Friday’s meeting.“What happens is, when you go 20 years, things that cost $100,000 in 1982 cost a lot more today,” said Fred Poston, vice president for finance and operations.Poston said the board is seeking to increase the maximum amount to $500,000 and the new limit could help expedite construction projects.

Life experience proves most Americans not polite people

This may be too ambiguous a societal facet to judge, but I wonder what happened to the value of having manners - or at least caring about other people. It just seems like a many of people are rude and impolite. Maybe I’m not the only one who feels courtesy and decorum are becoming a bunch of old-fashioned “rules” taking a back seat to modern modes and indecency. I’m not contending I’m the world’s most civilized person.

A state court will allow an initiative on the Nov. 5 ballot that would let voters decide if billions of dollars should be shifted from educational programs to health-care programs.Judges from the Michigan Court of Appeals voted 2-1 Friday to allow the Healthy Michigan Initiative onto the ballot and let Michigan voters decide what will happen with the money.In 1998, Michigan was awarded about $8 billion in a nationwide lawsuit from tobacco companies.

The Spartan men’s soccer team added a win to its record over the weekend, downing Indiana-Purdue Indianapolis on Sunday, 2-1.Perhaps it was the sweltering heat, or maybe the fact that IUPUI (0-4) was shutout against Michigan in an 8-0 loss in its last game, but when MSU (2-1) took the field, it looked anything but prepared to do battle.“Even in the warm-ups we didn’t seem very spirited,” Spartan head coach Joe Baum said.

Phi Delta Theta got a jump on the recruiting process this weekend.Ecto-1, the car from the original “Ghostbusters” film, was on campus for most of the weekend - the fraternity used the car as a recruitment tool. The owner of the car, Bob Lintz, shipped the car from his home in Rocky River, Ohio, to add a little fun to Saturday’s greek tailgate.“(The kids) love it,” he said.
