Laws influence could hinge on panels recommendation

The Battle of the Sexes has fought in the Title IX ring before - this time it’s determined to end in a truce. For 30 years, Title IX has been the police officer ensuring, among other issues, that men and women compete in athletics as equals at schools and universities that receive public funds. Now the interpretation of the law is up for debate, and MSU students and administrators are waiting to find out what it means for the future of Spartan athletics.

Lansing City Council to address local finance authority

Tonight’s Lansing City Council meeting will address a resolution from the Ingham County Board of Commissioners to adopt the Lansing Regional SmartZone Plan, zoning issues and park development strategies. The board sent a resolution to the council to consider the creation of a local finance authority called the Lansing Regional SmartZone.

Team goes unscathed

The women’s soccer team came out of the gate slowly, but the Spartans scored three goals in the second half to post a 4-0 victory over Detroit (4-7-4) on Sunday. “The biggest concern we had was that with this game being played in the middle of the Big Ten season, we didn’t come out flat,” MSU head coach Tom Saxton said.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Ethernet fee proposed for dorms

An MSU official is saying the university is considering charging for Ethernet services in the residence halls for the 2003-04 school year.“The cost of Internet connectivity more than doubled this past year,” said David Gist, vice provost for Libraries Computing and Technology.

ASMSU forms program to combat citys noise problem

MSU’s undergraduate student government hopes to solve the noise problem in East Lansing.ASMSU passed a bill at its weekly meeting Thursday, creating a program to address the pressing issues and possible solutions to the high-decibel noise attributed to MSU students in East Lansing.The program will outline and develop a set of guidelines for students living off campus.

Fraternity faces possible eviction

Another MSU fraternity has been hit with the possibility of ceasing operation due to noise violations. Members of The Delta Chi Fraternity, 101 Woodmere Ave., will be evicted from their house if the East Lansing Housing Commission upholds a suspension of the fraternity’s rental license. The commission suspended the license for 180 days beginning Jan.

It was a cool 23 degrees outside when Northern Michigan University students Ben Weimert and Mark Slykhouse began the 390-mile trek to East Lansing on Sunday morning.“We left at 5 a.m.,” Weimert said.

Lansing - Brad Fast and two children bundled in coats, hats and gloves slowly pulled a long wooden spoon through a charred kettle of boiling brown butter on Sunday afternoon. LCC board to vote on domestic-partner benefits for workers

The Lansing Community College Board of Trustees is expecting to approve domestic-partner benefits for its faculty and staff members today. The benefit package for couples in same-sex relationships is included in contracts set to be voted on for all LCC bargaining units. Current LCC provisions entitle the spouse of a full-time employee to apply for benefits from three different carriers that offer health, dental and vision care.

When Nicole Ramp was little, she liked to climb trees, play football and race with the boys.By the time she was in high school, she had started wearing men’s pants, shirts and ties.But it wasn’t until her sophomore year at MSU that she came out publicly identifying herself as a transgender person.“There’s so many different sides of me,” the interdisciplinary studies in humanities senior said.

The No. 5 MSU field hockey team is continuing to pile on the wins, and head coach Michele Madison is reaching milestones as a result.Sunday’s 3-0 win over Ball State marked the squad’s 15th victory and also signaled Madison’s 100th victory on the Spartan sidelines.Just three games ago, Madison celebrated her 150th career coaching victory with a 5-1 win over Indiana.Sophomore back Judith van Haeringen said the game’s significance, coupled with the crowd of families and alumni in the stands, fired the team up.“It’s always fun to play in a game like this.” van Haeringen said.
