Smoke screen

It seems like an obvious conclusion. Michigan’s $8.5 billion share of the nationwide tobacco settlement should be used to improve health issues. But voting for Proposal 4 is not the way to make that happen. Michigan is one of only a handful of states that does not use any of its take from the 1998 tobacco settlement to reduce smoking.

Smoker suspended from Wisconsin game

MSU junior quarterback Jeff Smoker has been suspended and will not play in Saturday’s game against Wisconsin, according to media reports Thursday afternoon.Smoker, who has thrown for 13 touchdowns and 1,593 passing yards through seven games this season, was punished for training violations, Lansing TV station WILX reported.University and athletics department officials declined comment.

After two straight losses and countless questions regarding a lack of toughness, MSU head coach Bobby Williams decided this week was the time to mix things up in practice.So for the first time all season, the Spartans’ first-team offense squared off against the first-team defense on the practice field.“We get real excited when we get to go against the first-team offense,” sophomore linebacker Ronald Stanley said.

Posthumus hopes to balance budget, retain merit award, foster automakers

If Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus, R-Alto, is elected governor Nov. 5, he will be the third consecutive MSU graduate to become the state’s executive, and he will face a full plate of issues. He says the state budget is a priority, but he remains concerned about long-term issues, including working with the auto industry to keep Michigan as the motor capital of the world and having every child read by third grade. Gores Monday visit to campus confirmed

Former Vice President Al Gore’s spokesman Jano Cabrera confirmed Wednesday that the 2000 presidential candidate plans to appear at the Democratic Victory 2002 rally Monday at MSU. Gore’s visit will serve as a campaign stop for leading state Democrats, including Attorney General Jennifer Granholm, who is the party’s nominee for governor.
