Ohio State serial rapist at large; U feels secure

A series of rapes on the campus of Ohio State University has left students concerned, but MSU police say there has not been a significant increase in sexual assaults at MSU. With five rapes on the Columbus, Ohio, campus since May, some female students at Ohio State are carrying pepper spray, walking in groups and sleeping with baseball bats.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Board pushing for more money from the state

Trustee Colleen McNamara said MSU’s Board of Trustees will vote at Friday’s meeting on requesting more money from the state in appropriations for the 2003-2004 school year. The funding gap between Wayne State University, the University of Michigan and MSU is a concern that McNamara hopes can be corrected. “We are getting more and more students,” McNamara said.

The No. 23 MSU men’s golf team won its second tournament of the season Wednesday after the final round of the Adams Cup of Newport at the Newport National Golf Club in Newport, R.I.This was the first outright tournament victory for the men, who tied with Xavier in the Wolverine Invitational, in Ann Arbor last weekend.The Spartans came out of the Orchard Course with a final team score of 873 after the last round Wednesday, three strokes ahead of Texas A&M.

Religious, LGBT leaders rally for equal rights

Lansing - Religious leaders joined lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender rights advocates at the state Capitol on Wednesday to show support for anti-discrimination and anti-bullying legislation. As part of National Coming Out Week, church leaders addressed a group of people holding signs reading, “No one is free when others are oppressed” and “People of faith say no to discrimination.” “We cannot stand in isolation anymore,” said Michael Gibson-Faith, director of the LGBT issues program for the American Friends Service Committee.

ASMSU acting director not hired

ASMSU is once again left without an association director after the Academic Assembly voted against the approval of James Perra for the position Tuesday.The decision came as a surprise to Perra, who moved from Student Assembly representative to association director in late September and has been acting in the position since.The association director acts as the “internal housekeeper” within ASMSU to make sure things are running smoothly between both of the undergraduate student government assemblies.To hire a person in a new position, both assemblies must approve the hire before he or she officially takes the position.The Student Assembly approved the decision with little debate, but the Academic Assembly didn’t follow suit - the bill failed 9-5.

Hyperbole to perform at Landshark Friday

Local pop-punk band Hyperbole is ripping it up at The Landshark, 101 E. Grand River Ave., at midnight Friday. The five-piece band just released “Boy Meets Wonder” in September and is touring across Michigan for the next two months. Guitarist Jacob Jon Bender said fans of bands like Blink-182, New Found Glory and Saves The Day should give the band a listen.

Team expects return to elite status

The media got its first look at the 2002-03 MSU men’s basketball team Tuesday afternoon and the Spartans have high expectations for the upcoming season.The Spartans, which are coming off a 19-11 season and a first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament, are looking to bring their game back to a higher level.“We took a look at last year and the last three years to see where we need to go and how we’re going to get back to elite status,” Spartan basketball head coach Tom Izzo.“Looking back at last year, we didn’t have any expectations, we just wanted to survive.
