Holiday sales to remain subpar

Michigan retailers are expecting subpar sales this holiday season, in line with national trends and retailer forecasts. The Michigan Retail Index reported that while 57 percent of state retailers are expecting higher holiday spending compared to a year ago, the projected revenue growth is only 3.7 percent.

The numbers suggest that most of you reading this will not get out and vote. Whether you feel the candidates don’t represent you, your vote doesn’t count or you just don’t care about the election, your vote still matters. The mass of men and women over the course of history has not had the important privilege that we students enjoy. Even today, too many people in the world do not have the simple right to have a say in who their leaders are. Though this right is simple, the process of gaining it has been anything but.

Defense leads to victory

Defensive tenacity paid off in the second half as the MSU women’s basketball team shut the door on the Athletes in Action, battling its way to a 83-72 decision Sunday. Athletes in Action, or AIA, is a traveling team composed of professional and post-collegiate players on a three-week, 16-game tour playing exhibition games around the country. Perhaps the most impressive statistic for the Spartans was the even scoring distribution, as four MSU players posted double-digit scores, while no player had fewer than five points. The Spartans were led by senior forward Syreeta Bromfield who knocked in 21 points and nabbed seven boards in the process.

Hip-hop comes to Breslin via annual Fake the Funk

The adrenaline was pumping on stage, behind the curtain and in the crowd. For the thousands of attendants and performers at Fake the Funk, Saturday was the culmination of months of perfecting steps, picking the right outfit and anticipation for the after party. An estimated 9,000 people attended the 12th annual show at Breslin Center - more than double the attendance two years ago when the event last took place at the Auditorium. Bomb Squad Productions helped put on the event.

Smoker family says QB has problem

The family of junior quarterback Jeff Smoker released a statement Sunday night admitting their son has a substance abuse problem, and a source close to the team confirmed the signal caller has been using marijuana and cocaine for some time. “We feel like the time has come to share some information about Jeff Smoker’s personal struggle with substance abuse,” the statement read.
