Race issues top talk on Williams, SN

More than 200 people gathered to voice conflicting viewpoints on two issues to the Black Student Alliance on Thursday night - the firing of former MSU head football coach Bobby Williams and coverage of racial issues in The State News. In the end, the alliance concluded it would gather and disseminate the ideas discussed and create a plan of action.

Serious situation was aided by laughs

Even though I really can’t stand Nate Allen’s cartoons - which obviously are pro-Democratic and pick on a president who is, in my opinion, doing the best damn job he can - I must say that when I opened Tuesday’s paper, I had a smile on my face accompanied by a childish giggle.

Ferguson has odd sense for diversity

As a Hispanic MSU alumna, I have never felt I was treated unfair because I am a minority. It really upsets me that MSU Trustee Joel Ferguson would lash out at Athletics Director Ron Mason and basically call him a racist. Ferguson discusses the importance of diversity, but when he speaks of this, he only discusses one minority group. I have never heard him stand up for Hispanics, who are a larger minority than African Americans. It’s sad that this has to turn into a race issue.

Booers should be ashamed of selves

First, I would like to say what a shame it is that Spartans jump off the band wagon as soon as it starts falling apart. A few years ago when Bobby Williams was named football head coach, his players stood behind him and worked hard to prove all of the naysayers wrong. Williams was put under a lot of pressure to change something in a blink of an eye when it normally takes weeks or months to turn teams around. Williams is not responsible for the personal lives of the athletes.

Wrestling team hosts tourney at Jenison

No. 16 MSU is hosting one of the nation’s largest tournaments this weekend. The Michigan State Open, held Saturday and Sunday at Jenison Field House, is a double-elimination tourney with each wrestler competing on an individual basis, and no team scoring. Last season’s event brought to the mats more than 300 wrestlers from 18 different schools, including five ranked squads. This year, the Big Ten features seven of its 11 teams ranked in the top 20, according to the National Wrestling Coaches’ Association poll released Wednesday. Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State and Illinois grace the poll’s top 10 list, with Minnesota nabbing the top spot.

Bowling controversial look at gun control issue

For being an educational tool starring a Flint man asking simple questions, it could just be the best film of the year. Michael Moore bases his latest film, “Bowling for Columbine,” on one question: Why did Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold go on a shooting rampage at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., more than three years ago? The answer will scare you. The answer is, no one knows.

After a tight race for the single open Lansing City Council seat, Brian Jeffries rose as the winner early Wednesday morning. The 47-year-old ASMSU Legal Services attorney won 14,480 Lansing votes, or 51 percent, over Kathy Pelleran’s 13,752 votes, or 49 percent.

Play the game

With most of Michigan’s government set to be dominated by Republicans after Tuesday’s election, its seems the governor-elect will have a tough road ahead of her. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Allen shouldnt have made joke of issue

I was appalled to see Nate Allen’s cartoon in Tuesday’s edition of The State News. MSU quarterback Jeff Smoker might have made bad decisions, but that does not mean we shouldn’t support him on his road to recovery. But Allen chose to make fun of Smoker and make his journey to recovery that much more difficult. In the coming weeks, the MSU football program will come under much criticism.
