ONLINE UPDATE: Pittman defended by fellow trustees

Several MSU trustees defended fellow Trustee Randall Pittman on Friday, after court documents The State News obtained this week revealed Pittman was found liable on multiple counts of civil fraud by an Illinois appellate court in 2000.An attorney representing MedCell Biologics Inc. said he is working to cancel a deal between the company and one of Pittman's companies after having learned of Pittman's prior business actions.But Trustee Scott Romney said no one should be judging Pittman yet."Randall Pittman is a person of great integrity of great ability," Romney said.

'U' plans for cuts across campus

MSU academic departments are preparing contingency plans to reduce budgets in preparation for likely cuts in state funding for higher education.MSU Provost Lou Anna Simon asked departments this week to present ways to reduce budgets 3 to 7 percent in order to soften possible double-digit-percentage- point tuition increases.

Purdue free safety Stuart Schweigert is a playmaker. Whether it's making a big hit, knocking a ball down or intercepting a pass, the 6-3, 215-pounder does it all and he relishes the opportunity to change a game. 3 prospects make it official

MSU men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo said on National Signing Day on Wednesday that even though he and his assistant coaches only had three open slots for scholarships, the Spartans' 2003-04 recruiting class has been a "treat recruiting season." "There is no question this is one of the best recruiting classes we've had," Izzo said.

'U' to celebrate week of international education

MSU will celebrate International Education Week starting Saturday. The event is in its third year and is sponsored by the dean's office of International Studies and Programs. Jay Rodman, special projects coordinator for international studies and programs, said this year MSU has more events and higher profile speakers than the last three years. "It's very exciting," Rodman said.

6 recruits sign letter of intent to play next fall

On the eve of National Signing Day, the MSU hockey coaching staff expanded its recruiting class by two players. Forward/defenseman Tyler Howells of Eden Prairie, Minn., and defenseman Chris Snavely of Lancaster, Pa., both inked National Letters of Intent with MSU on Wednesday - less than 24 hours after they verbally committed. Forward Tommy Goebel of Parma, Ohio, and goaltender Dominic Vicari of Clinton Township also signed Wednesday.

Ex-Spartan released by Buffalo Sabres

Former MSU hockey player Jason Woolley was waived by the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.Sabres spokesman Gregg Huller said Woolley will be sent down to Buffalo's American Hockey League affiliate in Rochester if he's not claimed by another NHL team by Friday.Woolley, a defenseman, had no goals, three assists and 29 penalty minutes in 14 games with the Sabres this season.

After three fires in the past month at Ramada Inn, East Lansing fire officials say they have ruled out all explanations except human causes for the latest blaze.But it remains unknown if the last two fires, which occurred on Thursday and Sunday, were the result of foul play, said East Lansing Fire Marshall Bob Pratt.
