SPORTS UPDATE: Field hockey teams moves on to championship of Big Ten Tournament

Columbus, Ohio - The stage has been set. With a 3-2 victory over Penn State (13-3 overall, 3-2 Big Ten) Saturday, the MSU field hockey team (17-2, 4-1) has advanced to the final round of the Big Ten Tournament, and in doing so will face off against Michigan on Sunday. And according to Spartan head coach Michele Madison, her team wouldn’t want it any other way. “We love it,” Madison said.

Freshman left wing David Booth did his best to shake the rust out of the Spartans on Friday night, but 13th-ranked MSU still succumbed to heavy underdog Niagara, 2-1, at Munn Ice Arena.Booth scored 41 seconds into Friday’s game, but that was all MSU (4-3-0 overall, 3-1-0 CCHA) could muster for the entire night.

Izzo: Hit unfair to current U-M team

Spartan basketball head coach Tom Izzo said he’s saddened University of Michigan head coach Tommy Amaker and the current 2002-03 U-M basketball squad will be punished. U-M penalized its basketball program Thursday because of a scandal involving former booster Ed Martin. “I’ve always been a believer that the coaches and the players should take the hit, not the school,” Izzo said.

Greeks select new executive leaders

Jennifer Granholm and Dick Posthumus weren’t the only ones sweating bullets this week in elections. Members in 21 of MSU’s 29 Interfraternity Council groups selected new executive officials Wednesday night at Lafayette Square in Brody Complex. “I feel very good about the process,” said Amy Radford, assistant director of Student Life.

Lansing - Community leaders and Lansing area residents gathered Thursday at a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new Lansing fire station located off East Miller Road in south Lansing.The $1.75 million station will be the second that will be funded through voter-approved bond initiatives.

3 face charges

Three MSU students were arraigned Wednesday after police discovered a pound of marijuana and other drugs in their East Lansing home.The students charged were Michael Puretz, 20; Adam Vielea, 21; and Ryan Webster, 20.

When Mojo spotted Samantha Janes approaching the school bus with a bag of food, a DJ for WWDX (92.1-FM), The Edge, sprinted to her, embracing her in a bear hug. “I try to meet everyone who donates,” Mojo said, pointing to the school bus bearing signs for the radio station - the official collection spot for the “Stuff the Bus 2002” campaign. MSU Athletics Director Ron Mason said he never expected such big problems only four months into his five-year term.“It’s really been kind of unfortunate and a sad time for MSU athletics that something like this has to come down,” Mason said concerning the football team.

Wharton Center offers Southern blues show

Wharton Center will host a concert celebrating the Delta Blues tradition at 8 p.m. today in the Great Hall. Billed as a “jam session not to be missed,” “Front Porch Blues” will feature Charlie Musselwhite, Elvin Bishop, Corey Harris, Henry Butler and Deborah Coleman. The musicians will perform blues classics as well as their own tunes on instruments ranging from harmonica to guitar and piano.

Spartans hit road for two games

The MSU volleyball team doesn’t like being in the middle of the Big Ten standings, and players said this is a great weekend to do something about that. The Spartans (15-7 overall, 7-5 Big Ten) are stuck in fifth place, but a pair of wins would bump them up in the conference.
