Spartans destroy U-M, 73-56

As the final horn sounded, sophomore guard Kristin Haynie threw the ball to the rafters and the crowd erupted - the rivalry was back in East Lansing. MSU (12-7 overall, 5-3 Big Ten) defeated the University of Michigan (11-7, 2-5) for the first time in nearly four years, stomping the instate rivals 73-56 at Breslin Center. "Our seniors this year said, 'We weren't going to leave until we beat Michigan,'" senior guard Syreeta Bromfield said.

ASMSU to discuss early class issue

ASMSU representatives are weighing in on the controversy surrounding the elimination of 8 a.m. classes. Since Penn State University officials announced a trial period of eliminating early-morning classes this month after receiving feedback from students, MSU has been divided on how to address the issue. MSU's undergraduate student government debated the issue at its Academic Assembly meeting. After passing through the policy committee, the issue could be written into a bill and voted on by the assembly next month, Matt Clayson, Academic Assembly chairperson said. Associate registrar Dugald McMillan said new concepts involving course scheduling are decided by the university provost, but 8 a.m.

Hockey team loses home game against Miami

Even with a boatload of history on its side, the MSU hockey team couldn't pull off a much-needed victory over Miami (Ohio) on Friday at Munn Ice Arena.Instead, Miami won in East Lansing for the first time since 1997, and snapped MSU's seven-game unbeaten streak with a 5-3 victory.

Debate team earns honors

The empty Mountain Dew and Squirt bottles that had accumulated over the last few weeks poured out of a Hefty trash bag and fueled the energy pumping through the students' veins to stay up late researching.Despite signs urging members "don't be a slob," scattering the walls of Room 10 in Linton Hall, the space was cluttered with old research notes and articles.But it was more than caffeine that brought home four trophies for the MSU Debate Team."Most people have no idea what we do," Aaron Hardy, an interdisciplinary humanities junior said.

Corgan shines with Zwan

Someone must have given Billy Corgan a lobotomy. All the doom, gloom, creative mongering and overproduction of his previous musical releases is gone. His saving grace has arrived in the form of "Mary Star of the Sea," the first release from his new band, Zwan. "All I wanted/was you here next to me/a little sunshine sympathy," Corgan belts on "El Sol." Sporting some honest-to-goodness, faith-loving sentiment on the record, "Mary Star," Corgan might credit his changeover to God. Writing about God in a positive nature is a subject Corgan began to tinker with on the Smashing Pumpkins' last record, the Internet-released "Machina 2." Corgan even lists himself as evangelist Billy Burke on the album's credits.

Students seek more meningitis shots, info

Although the meningitis vaccine is only effective for three to five years, health officials say a booster isn't necessary to protect students from the disease. About three years ago, MSU distributed about 16,000 free vaccinations after a student contracted the illness.

E.L. might not face further cuts

East Lansing's pocketbook might avoid the chopping block when Gov. Jennifer Granholm's executive order is issued next week. As preliminary drafts of the order float around legislative offices, municipalities are keeping their fingers crossed that they'll survive the state's next round of cuts without any further damaging blows. After reviewing the draft, some state officials say revenue sharing won't be cut any further.

E-mail recovery today

The telnet directory search on the MSU home page experienced a technical glitch Thursday afternoon, returning home addresses instead of campus addresses when searching for student information. Bruce Alexander, associate director of Administrative Information Services, said they are currently working to correct the problem and accurate directory information is expected to be online today. Granholm confirms higher ed budget cuts

Grand Rapids - Gov. Jennifer Granholm told The State News on Friday that state universities should expect a 1.5 percent funding cut in coming days.The cut - equaling $5 million for MSU - comes on the heals of an executive order last month reducing the university's state intake by $6 million."I think we are going to see this 1.5 percent cut," said Granholm, after addressing the Michigan Press Association.

On a 15-degree day, Melinda Haus sits in her wheelchair in front of East Wilson Hall, impatiently waiting for a bus to take her to class. Fifteen minutes later, she's still waiting because the bus that was supposed to pick her up at 5 p.m.
