Spartans convert must-win, down Minnesota, 71-61

The Spartans were in a must-win situation Wednesday night and they didn't let the opportunity slide by.MSU (15-11 overall, 7-6 Big Ten) kept its NCAA Tournament hopes alive by defeating Minnesota 71-61 in front of a boisterous Breslin Center crowd.Sophomore forward/guard Alan Anderson led the Spartans with 18 points, while sophomore guard Kelvin Torbert added 17.

Study: One-fifth of drinkers aren't 21

Underage drinkers account for one-fifth of all alcohol consumption in the U.S., according to a recent national study.The study, conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, reported youths between the ages of 12 and 20 years old amount to 19.7 percent of alcohol consumption in the nation.The study, which was released in Tuesday's Journal of the American Medical Association, said the total of underage drinking amounts to about $22.5 billion in sales.The results came from a 10-month analysis of three sets of data, including figures from the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, which involved more than 50,000 people aged 12 and older polled in 1999.The article, "Alcohol Consumption and Expenditures for Underage Drinking and Adult Excessive Drinking," also used figures from several national and federal institutions."The value of this survey points to a huge problem that has been around for some time," National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism spokeswoman Ann Bradley said.

Few applications received for ASMSU seats, deadline today

Adam Raezler's ASMSU application almost didn't make it into the pile because of a little confusion his freshman year. "It was the first time I'd been to that end of campus and I got lost," the political theory and constitutional democracy sophomore said. Raezler said just as he was considering giving up, he found the building and now sits on the MSU undergraduate student government's Academic Assembly as a representative for James Madison College. Applications are due by 4:30 p.m.

Senior Class Council deadline approaches

Applications are available to join the Senior Class Council for the 2003-2004 academic year. Any junior or returning senior is eligible to sign up. The deadline to apply is Thursday.

Forums discuss safety improvements, student turnout low

Suggestions ranging from card swipers at living area entrances to using security guards as night receptionists were talked about at three forums on safety in MSU's residence halls Tuesday evening. Information from small groups of MSU parents and students will be used as part of a Residence Halls Security Committee report to MSU President M.

Affirmative

America needs affirmative action. It is the inherent duty of our governmental institutions to level the playing field of life and root for the underdog so he or she can come to realize the American dream - the rags-to-riches story that helps constitute our national ideology. There are some Americans who seem afraid of what a level playing field could mean for their own quality of life; perhaps filling in the gaps between the have and have-nots might mean they will have less.

MSU is walking into a win-lose situation heading into tonight's matchup with Minnesota. Win and keep hopes of an NCAA Tournament berth alive; lose and consider its dance card lost in the mail.A loss at the Breslin Center tonight for the Spartans (14-11 overall, 6-6 Big Ten) could be catastrophic and running the table in the Big Ten Tournament might be the Spartans only hope for reaching the NCAA Tournament.The Golden Gophers, on the other hand, are looking to steal a conference game on the road to keep their own tourney hopes afloat.Minnesota (16-7, 8-4) strung several lopsided runs together en route to a 77-69 win in January when the teams met at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.

Student groups call for 'U' to speak on affirmative action policies, racism

MSU students are demanding more attention from university officials concerning affirmative action and recent racially motivated incidents on campus.Representatives from the Council of Racial Ethnic Students and Council of Progressive Students expressed their discontent with how MSU has responded to the University of Michigan's admissions policies, a racially incentive flyer in Shaw Hall and other incidents on campus.The groups announced that they are formulating a plan called MSU Affirmative REACTION at press conference held today in the Multicultural Center at the Union.REACTION stands for Reminding Every American Citizen That It's Our Need.
