Pamphlet to educate student activists on their rights

The Department of Student Life is helping student activists understand their rights and the rights of others in a new pamphlet titled "What Every Activist Should Know."In it's preliminary stages the pamphlet describes the balance between a student's right to voice their opinion, as well as university guidelines."It's a ticket to be successful in terms of being an activist," said Richard Shafer, associate director of Student Life Judicial Affairs.

East Lansing officials are looking at new marketing tactics and innovative permits to attract motorists to use the city's parking system.With fewer people parking in the system, the city is looking for opportunities to improve customer convenience and efficient usage of the garages.The city council will discuss the parking budget at 6 p.m.

Rogers: Turkish role is critical

A day after returning from a congressional mission to Turkey, U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers says the United States is nearing an agreement to allow troops to be stationed at the Turkish-Iraqi border. Arbitration hearing between union, 'U' delayed by weather

Arbitration of a grievance between members of the Graduate Employees Union and MSU officials has been postponed.The final step of the union's grievance procedure was set to occur Wednesday, but heavy snow prevented the Southfield-based arbitrators from making the trip to East Lansing, union President Scott Henkel said.A new date has not been set."We have been talking about this for so long, since August," Henkel said.

Izzo says Big Ten Tournament can derail a team's confidence

The Big Ten Tournament is six years old this season, but MSU head coach Tom Izzo isn't convinced its growing pains are done. As the men's basketball team prepares for this weekend's tournament in Chicago, Izzo said Monday the Big Ten Tournament is, at best, a mixed blessing for players and coaches as they prepare for the NCAA Tournament the following week. Izzo said the revenue and exposure the conference generates for Big Ten programs is a positive, but the "one and done" philosophy surrounding the Big Ten Tournament isn't the best representative of a season of hard work. "All you harp on all season is playing 40 minutes," Izzo said.

When faced with an almost overwhelming family ordeal, John Magnan decided to turn pain into art.After his wife, Mary, was diagnosed with an advanced stage of ovarian cancer in April 1999, the professional sculptor and New Bedford, Mass., native began crafting various artistic works to help him cope with her illness."I'm an artist, and this was my way of dealing with the trauma of my wife's fairly severe diagnosis," Magnan said.The pieces eventually became the 15 compositions forming the "Body Image/Body Essence" national art exhibit tour.
