Gymnastics Club in Lansing, Teberah Alexander watched her daughter flip on the trampoline while writing a paper about compassion for her nursing class.Alexander has watched 4-year-old Amiya grow during the majority of her college career.When Alexander turns her tassel on May 2, her daughter will be cheering her on.Alexander is co-chairperson of MSU's Student Parents on a Mission, a student parent support group.Members meet once a month and Child and Family Care Resources pays for child care that evening.

McPherson to head Iraq's financial reconstruction, leave 'U' temporarily

From Staff Reports The State News MSU President M. Peter McPherson plans to temporarily leave the university to aid in the financial reconstruction of Iraq, an official confirmed Thursday. This morning, McPherson told Peter Magrath, president of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, he plans to leave MSU for at least two months to take part in the rebuilding of Iraq. "It makes a statement that President McPherson has been an extraordinarily successful president at Michigan State University, I know he has been, but it confirms it," Magrath said.

Provost Simon to be interim president in McPherson's absence

During President M. Peter McPherson's absence, Provost Lou Anna Simon will act as MSU's interim president."From the Board of Trustees' standpoint, our concern is obviously for the university and to assure several of the most important things we're in the midst of get carried on and put in capable hands when he's gone," Trustee Colleen McNamara said.

Uncontrollable

It seems city and university officials are constantly trying to prevent bad things from happening, and while their well-intentioned efforts are often understandable, there are some aspects of life that boil down to personal responsibility. Responsible drinking on a 21st birthday or any day of the week is one of those aspects. Still, on Tuesday, East Lansing's Responsible Hospitality Council passed new management policies to curb 21st birthday accidents.

Board to hear Eco tax appeal

After months of waiting, ASMSU and Student Life officials will discuss the addition of a $5 renewable energy tax to student tuition bills when they go before the University Student Appeals Board on Wednesday.University rules require new fees introduced by student governments to be voted on by more than 50 percent of undergraduate students, and a majority of those students must approve the measure for it to be implemented.But to change a fee that already exists, there is no requirement on the number of students who must vote.

Let me start by helping The State News decide if the "Your Voice" thing is for "us" or not ("Graduates do not represent 'voice'" SN 4/16). Who is "us?" I didn't realize once you left MSU you were no longer affiliated with the university.

SMITH: Stupid concertgoers too often ruin experience for music lovers

What's your biggest pet peeve? Seriously, think about it. Although I have a bunch (and could probably name each one off in alphabetical order), I really only have one real musically related one - people who don't attend a concert for the music. If you haven't experienced the annoyance, consider yourself extremely lucky. More than ever, it seems people just can't seem to shut up when the lights go down and the band begins to play.
